Scorched leaves are scorched for good, but you'll get new ones next year.

Despite attempts to keep them watered I've got scorched leaves all over. :(

I love Rhubarb, don't have room for it though.

When the temperature goes high enough, plants stop transpiring. Even if you keep them watered, they will suffer. I did a lot of planting last year. Between last winter and this summer, there's been a lot of damage, but that's gardening for you.

especially with this heat, it hard not to have scorched leaves. i have a hydrangea as well that is pretty toasty, but what can you do?

Many garden plants are native to much hotter climates than hours. Many people here do not water adequately. Of course, if a shade plant gets a large amount of hot sun it may be damaged even if root zone is thoroughly moist.

Cloud forest plants do not like 105.

Yes, there is not much of anything that like 105 degrees. That is why some californis gardeners grow tomatoes as a "cool" season plant. My yard looks like (stinky stuff). Even the Cornelian Cherry that never gets any water except from the sky, is burned. Am really mad about my tomatoes though. I pruned them before I left town, and now they are scorched.

It only got to 103 here. I guess that's why I'm not seeing damage to any of my plants.

Saucer Magnolia and Panicle Hydrangea are not cloud forest plants. And many of those that are from such places could be included under the "shade plants" category.

On properties around me I am seeing numerous Bigleaf Hydrangeas that have browning of the tops of the older inflorescences, otherwise look generally quite good.

A place a drove by yesterday with older, long-established hybrid rhododendrons now badly burnt is unshaded and clearly not being watered, the lawn looking like a desert.
