Overwintering freesia in PNW?

Query from Portland, OR: Can freesia be left in the ground to overwinter, or is it best to dig them up & store them in a dark, cool, dry place until spring.

If it's best to pull them, when is the best time to plant them?

Things I've found in books & on the web are conflicting. I figured I'd ask the folks with boots on the ground...or should that be dirt under the nails? (smile)

My wife planted freesia corms in SE Portland a few autumns ago and they did come up and bloom nicely the next year, but did not reappear after that.

They aren't supposed to winter over here, likely more because of all the rain rather than the cold since they are native to South Africa. I've never tried it though.

I grew them in Phoenix, they were trouble free there. Very few plants thrive here that also thrive there (as perennials)

Love the smell, love the delicate blooms. I bought some and meant to plant in the greenhouse and forgot to plant them. duh. :(
