I have a lovely dark purple clematis that Treepalm gave me---'Petite Faucon', or Little Falcon...
It's not a very vigorous grower, and might be just right growing thru your clethra...

Lisa, my 'Petite Faucon' was slow to get started but now in it's fifth year it grew six feet in several directions and had hundreds of blooms for a very long period of time.
