Dotty, it looks like a Fairyslipper orchid, Calypso bulbosa which is native to Vancouver Island and all along the coast. Does it have a perfume? Does it get a little deeper in color as the flower matures?

No, I'm familiar with Calypso bulbosa. This one has smaller flowers and has a lot of flowers on one drooping stem. Each flower is less than 1/2 inch high, the whole plant is about 14 inches tall. It's not very pretty, the flowers are kind of dull coloured but of course, I am always interested in orchids. Any other thoughts?

No, this isn't it. The flowers are clustered very closely together on the stem and are quite small and insignificant until you look at them closely. The plant is about 12 - 14 inches tall and starts out looking like a lily leaf. I'll put another pic in to see if that helps. I'm getting more curious. The flowers hang down -- I don't know how to rotate it properly here.

The flowers look very similar, but the ones in my garden don't grow upright -- they hang down. The flowers are all finished now but the stems are still there. I wonder if there is one of this variety that hang down? It's interesting.

Hi A. Went out and looked at the stems tht remain of this plant and yes, at least half are upright so you are right. There is one with a bud stem turned down, but it has ants on it so perhaps the reason for the downward stem is bug damage. I wouldn't quite call it invasive, but I certainly have a lot in the garden and they aren't particularly pretty. It's just neat to have a wild orchid. Thanks again for your id research.

Wild but not native. Pest behavior in North America already well established, I would weed them out.
