I couldn't believe it when the news had frost warnings last night, but at 11 PM I wasn't going to run out and cover anything. Luckily it only got down to about 40 here, 15 miles north of Concord, NH.

No frost yet here in Danby, Vermont, but the nighttime temperatures are certainly flirting with it (in the mid and lower 30s). I guess I should be thinking of bringing anything indoors that I want to winter over, which only consists of a few potted plants.

I'm sort of welcoming the demise of the wildflowers and weeds to take stock of how my young trees are doing. This time of year I'm ready to be done with mowing and weeding!

My husband mowed yesterday and I think he is also ready to be done with that lol...it just seemed to come so fast this year. Maybe I just enjoyed this summer too much and don't want it to end! :)

I hate this time of year. We had a cloud cover last night which helped keep things warmer but I'm going away this weekend and it looks like Thurs and Friday night are going to be close to 32. My pepper never got red this year and I'm debating on trying to keep them warm or picking them as is. Near Concord NH but we're in a little valley that gets frost before other places in town.

defrost, last year my habs kept on the plant through the first few light frosts, and the first one caused a considerable amount of them to ripen. Maybe I got lucky, because they're planted in a south facing raised bed.

Well we got our first hard frost last night - dropped to 30. Of course, hitting 74 tomorrow lol.

NO! I'm not at all ready for summer to end! We're still swimming and I'm still planting grass seed in the areas where the drought has killed off the lawn. This is usually the time of year when we Cape Codders get paid back for the crummy spring we have - it normally stays a lot warmer here through the end of October (but not always!).

I have dozens of pots to move into the garage this fall, just to save the terra cotta from disintegrating. It's a thankless task, but I do love those old clay pots.

Right at 32 here last night, so there was heavy frost on the cars, but only the top leaves of plants I hadn't covered were touched. The garden is at the top of an old river terrace and perhaps 40 or 45 feet above the river, so the worst of the cold air flowed down and away from the garden, I think, plus the mist forming off the river helps keep the air from cooling as much. I did cover the cold sensitive plants like basil and sweet potatoes, and also this evening, and I am planning to do quite a bit of harvesting this weekend.

When we lived in Concord NH 30 years ago, the first frost was usually between Sept 15-21. It depressed me. Even though there was always an "Indian summer" I still hated that things froze in the middle of September.

SHEESH! Most of the veggie garden got hit but the basil next to the south side of the house survived. Probably doesn't taste that good, though. Covered plants in high tunnel are fine. I can see a pattern that looks like wind coming from the west was the coldest but barn even though far away, provided a little protection since once zucchini plant is still flowering but a bit further away the cucumbers are done. Now we have that warm spell and so I'm glad I left peppers growing in the high tunnel. Looking forward to swiss chard sweetening up. One barrel planter with alyssum, pink petunias, coleus, etc still looks good. Ugly orange tall marigold (only one darn yellow in the Crackerjack mix) are gonzo which is fine by me. Sweet peas never bloomed.
