Watch for snails and slugs. These can pounce suddenly and reduce nice big heads to nubs in days.

I do bait and trap at certain times of the year, and have noted increasing slug damage as the rain has begun, but I am doing the "kill when washing the lettuce" plan at the present time. I've had them appear to wait until heads were large and full, then destroy them--after having little trouble up to that point. It's as if the mature heads gave off a chemical attractant or lost a chemical repellant they had up to that point. Maybe there was a protective bitterness that diminished.

The cardamine is edible also.
