'Picturata' can be either male or female, more than one clone has been grown. Did yours come with fruits on it? Otherwise, the main issue is that it is unstable - watch for reversions and snip them out.

The commonest cultivars sold here aren't necessarily the best ones. 'Crotonifolia' is a good one, although basically female a male form has also been seen (in England, anyway - don't know about here). Before tackling which gender the clone being offered might be first you'd have to find it for sale here. It has been around, Greer Gardens, Eugene, OR was listed for it in The Plant Locator - Western Region sourcebook. Other than that, maybe phone around and ask if anyone has male aucubas. It does seem most named cultivars consist either entirely or partly of female clones.

I have a lot of seedlings so I must have a male somewhere. I have never taken the time to identify it though.
