When you read the new Heronswood catalog (2007) they seem to be putting out the image that they embrace the Washington gardens as a research facility.
It's a little irritating.

I can't believe they have the nerve to advertise for their "first" Hellebore Spring Open.......and touting their "world famous display gardens". As if!! And in April, mind you, after hellebores here have pretty much done their thing.

I remember attending a number of real Hellebore Opens, including one with Will McLewin of Pheder Nursery as the guest speaker and another with Glenn Withey and Charles Price. Bet they're going to have trouble measuring up to that at Burpeewood.

I fully intend to read my "Heronswood" catalog; pretty pictures are always fun to look at. I'd even request a "free" one if they stop coming. No law says I have to buy just because I order the catalog, and I'm not feeling particularly like saving them postage and printing.

All the more reason to help save the real Heronswood. I'm joining now!

What happens to the money if they end up not buying the property?

Laura, I just got the 2007 Heronswood catalog this week too. They mention Western Washington so much it's almost like they're overcompensating.

I wouldn't hesitate to order from them if they had something I wanted/needed, but they did not. I notice that their "research facilities" "span four climate zones" though their production area is all in one back east.

If you read some of the verbage in the 2007 'Heronswood' catalog, it really puts one off. The use of the royal "we" is a bit too liberal, IMO, referring to species collected in Asia. The "we" should rightly be attributed to Dan, as I'm pretty sure no one from Burpees was along on those exploration/collection expeditions.

lilydude, it was explained to me that if the acquisition of the property by PNHC didn't come to pass, the funds would pass to the conservancy of other local horticultural sites and gardens, like the Miller or Chase gardens. Perhaps someone more closley aligned with PNHC could elaborate - it's a valid question.

I was put off by the verbage too, as well as being offended somewhat by the identification number on some of the plants, clearly indicating Dan's collecting and making me wonder how many would know just how rudely that relationship was severed. But then, just about everything about Burpee offends me these days.

I opened the catalog when it arrived and cringed at the number of photos being used that were clearly taken at Heronswood (Heronswood as we knew it). How I miss my text-only but packed full of useful information annual treat in the mail

"...where I once rambled in considerable contemplation, there is found a pathetic and pedestrian blend of plants that are not tended nor scrutinized but offered with descriptions that imply, laughingly, a vacuous absence of passion and knowledge or simply an organization too indolent or dimwitted to write descriptions of their own."

Although the general appearance is more or less the same (as of the last time I was there) maintenance was minimized during the limbo period, with some plants being allowed to decline and quite a few others being dug up and sent back East. Seems unlikely the garden is now going to be restored and maintained as it once was. Is there really someone in the Tribe's governing organization that is willing and able to use some of their funds to continue involved and enthusiatic ornamental gardening on the site?
