help w/new cutting

Hi I just rec'd a cutting from a friend visiting Botanical Garden Hawaii and have followed plumeria 101.com directions for planting. It's probably not a great time to plant since it's cooler fall temps in NC. On warm days, I can leave it out in day but is that too much of a shock between bright and low light inside? Should I just keep it in the house and water when totally dry? When I turn on the heat, should I put it on my heater vents to have bottom heat? Any advise you can give would be really appreciated. Also, how do you get the plant to grow with a bigger trunk? I took over the care of my dad's 6 footer but unfortunately it was very skinny and eventually died. Thanks!
