What color drapes would you recommend for this room?

The walls are Stonington Grey by Benjamin Moore. I would love some ideas for curtain colors. Thanks!

Hi aareeda, Marie here.
Seems like you have more issues than what colour drapery to get. Your furniture is squished in here, making the room look much smaller than it need be. I'd remove the little black/wood ottoman, and space out your sofa and chair/ottoman.

Regarding your windows - if this is a rental, I recommend drapery so you can take them with you when you move. If not, I suggest going with a Hunter Douglas Silhouette and then add drapery panels to soften the edges.

I've prepared a scheme utilizing teal as your drapery colour - keeping the sheer white as lightness, but dark teal will add a sexiness, intimacy to your space. I'd also add hits of antique gold items such as a mirror or side table. I'd also bring the teal and white down onto the floor in an area rug.

HI -- I think a medium charcoal velvet that has a slight tint of Lavender to it . But when in dought and so you can have them last for years is to get- Off White - maybe linen ,then it will never be wrong . And drape the whole wall , full height and wall to wall .Then have fun with your accent colors.

Bordeaux Velvet curtains, and the blue pillow must go. I sense some red undertones in the wall color, but that could be the screen.
Or the wall could be re-painted grey (manhatten mist in behr kind of grey), then white curtains are perfect, and so is the sky blue pillow. The room will look cleaner and more relaxing while crisp.

Hi aareeda, this is what I had in mind when I suggested panels in dark grey. I don;t think they would look good if closed all the way which is why I think stationary panels (they do not move) are the way to go.

I would do a large wide horizontal stripe, attempting to pick up the family of color in your chair/ottoman.

I definitely think you should keep the sheer white in the center and opt for the stationary panels. The dark grey isn't bad, but I also think the bright blue/turquoise would be stunning! I also think you should try the sofa against that back wall as someone else suggested, and float the accent chair facing the sofa at an angle. You might also want to add a nice rug and coffee table to complete the idea. the chair and sofa are beautiful though!

I agree that the dark gray drapes are too heavy for your space and they are photographing as kind of a muddy color. I would suggest something lighter with a subtle pattern like this set of curtains from West Elm.

I vote with Marie and the teal. Her teal is sensational. JC Penneys.com frequently has as variety of drapes for the budget mined; not sure about teal. Also, target.com can be a great place to look for area rugs. Etsy.com also has a lot of home decor items such as throw pillows and Photography for home decor. Check out my photography shop wow you are there, it is nancyhehmann.

Have fun! I think you have gotten a lot of great ideas.

I would think about getting a nice rug to warm up the space first. The nice wood floor is very bare. Then choose a color from the rug. If you don't use a rug then drapes in grey and tan , grey and white or solid grey. With the grey color , you can still add other color accents to the room.

The gray is nice, but, as others have mentioned, they need to stay pushed back to the ends of the rod. No drape is going to look good half pulled out.

The turquoise would be pretty to, and it would have more impact.

This room doesn't look arranged properly, although it could just be the photo. The sofa is awkwardly placed. Ordinarily, I'd think it was a false wall in a showroom. No matter what you do to the room, it won't look as you wish without a better arrangement. If the TV location is driving this, move the TV.

And invest in an area rug. Be sure it's large enough for at least the front legs of all seating to be on the rug. Love the turquoise, which is hot now. It's nice to see that color coming into its own. Given that it's a gray palette, a touch of lemon wouldn't go amiss.

Why not paint the ceiling the same colour as the walls? it will stop the room looking so "boxy". Curtains could then be quite a shiny silver/metallic with a neon pink rug on the floor (lose the blue pillow). Either that, or the drapes could be hot pink, maybe velvet.

I love the teal with some pillows and rug. Is there a reason you can't put the sofa on the long wall where that ottoman is? The wall looks bare while the rest of the room is crowded. The sofa on that wall and a beautiful picture or mirror above it would do a lot to balance the room.

Your furniture is beautiful. It's just not positioned well in the room. The couch and the chair should be facing almost opposite each other like in a conversation. See if the couch can fit on the wall without the window. Find drapes with pinch pleats or grommets. They are more elegant. The lines of your furniture are elegant and they deserve drapery panels. Be careful the drapes are overpowering the small room. I agree that they should be stationary with very sheer if you must in the middle. Use two rods. They need to be a very soft draping fabric. I agree with the turquoise. A silk turquoise with a stripe or small pattern would be beautiful.

Check out Pier 1, they have a couple of print drapes in a teal color. One has teal and gray. I also like the idea from Karen Paul Interiors using a banded drape in shades of white and gray. The second one may not be as over powering in a small space. You can then pick up your teal in a rug and more pillows. Hard to tell much about your room from one photo and we don't know what color may be in an adjoining room but gray and white also looks really good with yellow accents. You could easily move to that or any other accent color by choosing new pillows in that color and removing your teal accent. You have made nice choices so far. Good luck. Why can't the sofa go on tat big wall instead of in the corner like that? Wall not as long as it looks? Could it be angled in that corner instead of hugging the wall in the other corner?

If you must have it there, I would center it on the wall and float it out from the window about a foot. You can put a table on each end and the floor lamp in the corner. The two chairs should be floated out a little too, with the one in the cornet angled a little more toward the center of the room. The ottomans (ottomen?) make the room look cramped and cluttered, so I would move one of them out, most likely the black one as it is close to a doorway. You could add a nice rug in the middle and maybe use the print ottoman between the seating with a tray on top as a coffee table. The black ottoman could be used between the chairs the same way.

Sometimes you need to disguise a window in order to balance a space. If you hang drapes across the entire wall behind the sofa you could center the sofa in that space & put very small tables on either side of it. Apparently you do not have a need to access those doors or windows behind the shears. Hang room darkening shades if you want to block out the light. I think this furniture arrangement works well for your room. If you want you could eliminate the black foot stool to balance the two chairs. Looking good!

Love nanainatl's idea to balance the room with the entire wall curtained! If possible an opposite wall needs some height with a tall furniture piece or a large painting or print. Good luck.

What is your resistance to positioning the sofa on the wall that the 2 chairs are currently on?
Or perhaps try floating the sofa in the middle of the room facing the window with the gray curtain. What is over on the other side of the room? Is it open to the kitchen?...an entry ?

Yes, I would move the love seat to where the chairs are, and position the chairs under the window with a round lamp table inbetween the two chairs...

I would move the sofa against the wall and place the chairs across from it. You need a beautiful area rug to anchor the space. Again, I would use the teal color to liven up the room. It looks dull at he moment.

We had a small living room and we positioned the couch in a catty cornered position with a chair at a right angle to the couch. Perhaps you can try this. Then on the non window wall add a large picture or grouping of pictures.

I would try and put the couch on the biggest wall and two chairs opposite of the couch(would it be possible to get a pic of the whole room? if not, how many walls in the living room?). would you consider bamboo blinds or some kind of wooden blinds(roll up type) or roman shades. i think the curtains shrink the room a bit. but if you do opt for curtains i'd do a lighter weight fabric with some simple lines or shapes(i wouldn't do solid, looks boring to me: just my two cents,lol) I also agree about the teal(love the color) sorry didn't read all the post but is that all that is going in that room? is there a tv?

I did away with the teal. It was too much for me. I'm looking for a nice beautiful knit throw for my couch, yellow in color.
