That's a nice looking Artocarpus species. You don't see too many other species with that nice of a size besides jackfruit. The foliage looks incredible despite the hurricane damage. Do you think this plant is on par with jackfruits in term of hardiness or is a bit more sensitive? What's with the dog, looks like its about to greet your plant with a little present. =)

That`s right eggo, the leaves are stunning and huge (about 1m long and 60cm wide, although they become complete as the tree matures, same for marang). Will plant it soon, finally. Pedalai is a little behind jackfruit in cold hardiness, but not enough to make it shed its leaves at all (they just get a little odd).

Breadnut does shed leaves in here. But it grows new foliage soon after (since 7-10ºC only last one week in here).

Marang still can`t explain what happened, when they were 6 months old stopped growing and almost year later are the same way, only a couple have some small buds struggling on them.

Kwai muk, Artocarpus nitidus keep growing a little even with the cold.

The dog is a she. =D She was just smelling the 2 year old fudge sphagnum peat moss.

That's a lovely tree you have there - I've been thinking of getting one myself. From what I understand the mature trees don't have lobed leaves, but they are still the same impressive size. There was a HUGE specimen down in the Keys some years back (30+ feet high, in Adolf Grimal's collection), but I don't know if it's there any more. I hear the fruit is delicious.

im really looking hard for a pedalai tree to grow in my yard, i can find marang on TT but Pedalai is said to have a wilder looking fruit with better taste and they dont currently carry it.

any help?

Hi there! an old thread i know but wondering if it still active. Can you tell me if this tree is pedalai since i only learn about it a couple of days ago. I planted 15 of this at my farm in the PI recently actually believing their breadfruit.

Funny,the other day I was reading about the surge of Breadfruit farms. Did you know that most of the tropical world has never grown this for food? I don't remember the Johnny Breadfruit scientist who is trying to introduce it to the third world. It's a very recent article. Google for it.

I had also heard over the years it wasn't very good tasting. The article said just the opposite..it made a tasty flower for cakes or even Breadfruit chips. I've never tasted one myself.

Yes you are right it's not very popular in the PI also. I only recently found out about it coz i was googling fruit rich in carbs and it showed breadfruit as part of list. In the PI its known as rimas but there are no seedlings availability in the nurseries even in the bureau of plant industry.
