Need landscape ideas for backyard
Comments (51)@littlemissk, I like that instant shade solution. @ashleyoden if you use something with that style, you might want to change out your light pole to something a little more contemporary so it'll match. There are a lot of good suggestions here. I'm not that familiar with which plants work best in Alabama but I think trees give the biggest bang for the buck. Now that the project is bare dirt, it's better to do the most major additions now before you restore with sod. Move in all the bigger landscape trees and stuff you can and while you have the company or labor lined up to install the sod. Just have them prep the beds and use mulch where you eventually want to do smaller planting that you can install yourself if you want. If there are any other structures, future electrical for more lights or an eventual outdoor kitchen or irrigation, put in those services and sleeves underneath walkways. Have you thought about in a high traffic area of putting some synthetic turf and tying it into a putting green? Look at the great ideas on the site and think about what you’re going to be looking at the most when you’re in the house. Then create an outdoor room that looks great while you’re looking out from the windows as well as serves your needs poolside. Your outdoor room should have many elements an indoor room has. The ceiling is defined by the shade structure (or tree canopy), the walls by the fence or plants. You’ll also have your furniture, fire pit and lighting, a carpet of sod. Framed and enhanced by nice plantings and colorful pots as your accessories and it will draw you outside to enjoy. You're camera will help you. I don't think these angles best show the area where you'll want to concentrate. I also like to plan to have a nice large area for a tent or bounce house for bigger family events, so a 30 x 30' space is a good size to start with and keep large trees with spreading branching even farther away they don't encroach. Think about keeping it low maintenance, nice shaped beds that are easy to mow and trim with nice radiuses, easy to access with a piece of equipment if you need a repair. Luckily it looks like you have a nice sized yard to accommodate. Good luck...See MoreOLLD1/14
Comments (96)Good morning ladies! judy, my next door neighbor had a horrible time to what boiled down to tumor on her adrenal or pituitary gland. Took them a year or more to even figure that out. Turned out to be a tumor, the size of a pin head in her pituitary they finally got out. Not before she had put on nearly 100 pounds, lost a lot of her sight, couldn't walk, etc, etc.. Horrid. I'm so glad you are better. Amazing how much our fur babies add to our peace of mind. feeny, loving those beachy colors! If our house wasn't so rustic, I would have used colors like that throughout. I did use something like the Beach Glass as the bedding and drapes in the bedroom. Gives it such a restful feeling. roo, your grand is adorable! I wanted to do something Andy Warhol-ish with our grand-girl's photo. Now with Boo2 baking up, I'm going to wait and get both in the photo before attempting that....See MoreFabric for curtains and throw pillows
Comments (72)Kentucky Haze seems not quite blue green enough - love the muted quality but the darker tones are pure blue - same problem. What about heavenly blue http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/heavenlyblue or yarmouth blue HC-150 http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/yarmouthblue You won't know til you see them in your home in your light. If you buy little sample pots and paint them on foam core so you have a big enough piece, you can carry them around the room to see them in natural and nighttime lighting / against all your things and select before you invest. You always want to start with several shades because the reflections off existing things alone can make a color different on the walls. You can always mix your samples you don't use for the furniture piece you want to do and add enough craft paint in a strong tone to get the color you want. Good luck!...See MorePOLL: What makes a front yard?
Comments (120)I'd like to have an attractive edible front garden that produces lots of organic food. I'd include fruit and nut trees, perennials, herbs, raised beds for salads, and fruiting climbers on trellises and as bowers, with wood bark paths or old brick paving with mosaic seating. There'd be a strip out front near the footpath that invites the public to help themselves to herbs and edible wild plants (all labeled with their names). If I couldn't look after this productive garden by myself, I'd employ a local organic farmer to plant and maintain it as a pretty urban farm and share the harvest with her/him (as well as with neighbours). Not only would this front garden be much nicer than massive lawns, it would save a lot on lawn-care costs and contribute to the household food budget with super-fresh organic food....See Moregreenclaws UK, Zone 8a
