102 Year Old American Four Square

This was quite the family (kids included) project! 9 months of late nights, sweat and tears, we turned this ol' hidden Carolina beast into a beauty once again! 5000 sq ft....Inside and out, from the ground up....this was quite the undertaking!

Did you have to rebuild the brick? I see you added brick steps and knee walls, which look grand. I love the new color and the period windows. Love to see the inside, when you finish. Room by room, of course! Thanks so much for sharing.

Houssaon: Thanks! Yes, the foundation was solid although the wrap around porch had no footer...and had begun to pull from the house a bit so we tore out the existing porch and rebuilt to the most original replica we could. I think I will share some inside before and after later this evening when I get a little time to weed through all of the pictures. Thanks again! :o)

The house had been "abused" as a group home for 20 years and then vacant so unfortunately we could not save much of the interior. We did attempt to preserve the architectural integrity but upgraded for efficiency and function of a modern home. I think we achieved that. Ex- utilities run us $350-$400/month for 5000Sq ft! It has all new wiring, all new plumbing, new roof, new HVAC, insulation etc. IT is essentially the level of a new construction. We did maintain the original lath walls and the rough cut lumbar framing etc. Here is the formal living room entrance and staircase that we opened up.

Opps sorry forgot the original state when we started. Here is how the staircase and formal entrance, living room etc appeared. We opened up the staircase to the second level as well as the entry way to living room. We widened the casing going from foyer to formal living room in order to hide the plumbing we dropped down for an added upstairs bathroom. The floor plan had to be reconfigured since the group home had it so chopped up. It is now a 4bdrm, 4.5 bath with formal nursery. We just delivered our baby girl Maggie to complete our family of 6!

and finishing the process of staircase and formal living room..now you walk in and see the open staircase with openign to your left to the office, to your right is the opening to the formal living room.

Next are pics of the kitchen. This area of the home is one that we opened up a bit and strayed from the divided room, room, room of that era (so that each room could be heated separately with fireplaces) to a more open concept that combined the family room area and kitchen etc. The door in kitchen opens to the wrap around deck and car port drive under you will see later.

Next you can see the kitchen taking shape..

demo, lam beams and framing, we recessed the fridge as you can see the framing for.
