Help with mini makeover - NEED direction please.

I'm spinning in swatches and can't even sleep at night. Finally brave enough to paint these cabinets but need color advice. I love the gray/white kitchens I'm seeing but because I have an open floor plan (that's very warm/gold), I'm pretty sure I'll have to make lots of changes.

Since we just finished a major master bath redo, I'm trying to keep this project under 2000. Electrician is putting in recessed lights in the kitchen next week. (He's not part of the 2000 budget)

My questions and thoughts
1. Cabinets need to be light due to gray countertops and dark appliances? Do I attempt grays in here and change adjoining room colors? Creamy warm cabinets with greige walls? Or opposite? Possible to do dark cabs on bottom and light on top?

2. I'd like to paint cabs and island a different color, replace countertop on island only.

3. Plan to add cabinet hardware, add backsplash, and change window treatments.

4. Paint color for family room to complement kitchen? Raise and change window treatments.

5. Paint color for foyer? Paint stair railings and spindles?

6.Should I forget the grays and do warm colors in the kitchen surfaces that match the adjoining rooms?

Help is so greatly appreciated. We plan on doing a complete kitchen renovation in less than 5 years and will definitely hire a designer for that project. There's just not enough $ for that in this current budget.

I have a suggestion for you, if you ask only one question at a time you will get more designers suggestions. I will answer question 6, it is always best to coordinate your color scheme throughout the adjoining rooms.

I understand your dilemma. I, too, am working through a reno of the kitchen and have wood cabs and a wood banister in the foyer. I struggled about changing the cabs, but they are very well made, so I decided to just love the wood and give a facelift with modern hardware. How hard was it to make the decision to paint them? I can't do it! We also found original hardwood under the carpet in this 50 year old house, so we are going with the flow in LR DR and up the stairs throughout.

What about white marble counter on the island that would pick up the grays and lighten the room, with white or pale earth colored walls. In the fam room, use a complementing paler color? Sometimes if you just flip the colors, you can be satisfied with change.

    Good luck!

For a budget friendly option check out the new product at rustoleumtransformations.com People are getting good results for a lot less money. There is also a product called "Instant Granite" and it is a good match for the real thing - depth, layers, reflectivity! Can be used on laminate countertops.

Center the table under the light.

Not loving that sofa! The style is at odds with your decor and it's almost scarey looking like it's attacking the room. I know it's just me, but I can see angry faces in the back pillows!

You have very traditional, almost "granny" type decor, and then that sofa that belongs in a modern loft or man cave.

Is that an inlay in the floor? If so, you need to work with it and bring the sofa over so it's not straddling it. Is the sofa blocking the doors behind it?

I apologize if it was too much info. I'm really trying to find an updated color scheme for this level and not trying to add to my "Granny" scheme.

I like the color of your kitchen walls. As a matter of fact I am looking for that color for my kitchen walls. I painted my lower cabinets esspresso from Rustoleum and painted the top cabinets white, I wanted white linen but they did not have it on hand so I took 32 oz. almond and 32 oz white and mixed them. The finish is satan and the paint is great, you get a nice finish and the wood grain still shows through as if you stained them. The rustoleum I used was fast drying and it took me only a day to do it. I think you could go with esspreso on bottom and even a light green almost a hint of blue on top and this would blend with your counter top. Remember it does not matter what any of us think, its what you like. :)

I am in no way a designer but, If this was my house, this is what i would do.
    1. painting your cabinets a warm white color with new sliver hardware on both top and bottom, then stain the island the same color as your kitchen table top.. i know its dark.. but it will make a huge contrast to your cabinets. With the flat dark gray counter tops, it will make it harder to paint the top/bottom cabinets a different color and still look good. if you have the budget, get a new white/cream counter top for the island... then decide of the walls need to be painted or not... I would also change out the light fixtures to something more modern instead of old fashion and add wood blinds to the window. Then i would also add some under the top cabinet lighting to make it look more bright in your kitchen, since you have a lot of dark accents.
    2. I would defiantly repaint the family room!!!! That dark purple is not a flattering color in that space. If you are going to keep the large couch i would do a warm light blue color or warm gray... and accent the room with reds/golds/yellows by rug/pillows/ lamps.
    3. As for your foyer.... I just saw this and would LOVE to do this to yours!!! you have the most perfect foyer to do this in!....

I wish you the best in your remodel!
