Compare to Kummerowia striata (aka Lespedeza striata), Japanese clover.

You should place a coin or ruler in the picture to set leaf size.

Could it be chick weed? CW will grow very flat. Is it a problem? Grass should crowd it out. If it is CW, do not put it into the compost as it will grow very happily.

It looks like japanese clover. What's the best way to rid the clover?

I am averse to using pesticides unless their application appears to be the last option. Having said that, the only product that I have tried out of desperation is Weed-B-Gon, a three way weed killer. Even with that it took two applications at label rate about two weeks apart. It appeared to be eradicated with this method in a particular area of the yard last year but has returned again this year, leading me to believe that once this annual goes to seed it will return again and again from dormant seed remaining in the soil.
Another note - the appearance of this weed can sometimes be an indicator of low nitrogen levels in the soil. The area of the yard where it showed up again WAS fertilized, but only lightly once in the fall. This fall that area will receive two doses at regular rate.
Also, the type of Weed-B-Gon I used was for fescue. There are different combinations for different kinds of grasses. Make sure that the type you use is compatible with your kind of grass. And with fertilizer, make sure that the timing is right for your type of grass.
This weed is a scourge!

Lespedeza does not care for nitrogen. Possibly the way to kill it is with fertilizer.
