Growing Tomatoes

Im declaring war on the birds....only I have no weapons. Ive survived late planting, and blossom drop to finally have some maturing fruits and I went out to check yesterday morning and right in the side of a color turning tomatoe was a big hole bored in. Then today the hole was bigger where the bird has been back. How do I prevent this and is there a specific bird that goes after tomatoes that I should be aware of?

There is a thread somewhere documenting a mockingbird as likely to visit the garden.

I have remedied the situation (in this case squirrels)
by completly covering the garden with bird netting stretched loosely. How big the covering, and how you support is up to you!

The squirrels don't like getting tanglefoot, ditto with birds. The acorn munchers found a way in twice and were met with stiff resistance. A yellow whiffleball bat and a one by four. Out of the garden ye go ya little varmit.
Went scratching up the tree and has'nt been back yet.

I covered my plants yesterday in bird netting but will that affect the growth of my plants? I tried to create gaps where it wasnt touching any of my leaves but that just wasnt possible in all cases. Will the netting stunt the growth?
