Pls help-timely! Can heat from range back damage marble b-splash?

In kind of a tizzy as I have to make this decision today.

Also posting this in kitchens...

I'm going from a plan to build extra deep 28" base cabinets in range area to standard 24" (for aesthetic reasons). I'll have a marble slab backsplash and 36" AG Wolf range with griddle.

With 28" cabinets, there was going to be a strip of marble countertop about 4" deep between the back of the range and the marble. So, there was never a concern about heat that escapes from the back of the range (where the small 1" high "island" trim is) somehow damaging the marble.

I'm actually not even sure if heat actually escapes from the back where the island trim is...maybe the only heat is from the burners and re island trim is actually a little barrier in itself?

Does anyone know if damage to the marble backsplash is a valid concern?

I can live with cleaning the marble of grease, etc., my concern would be cracking or other heat damage to the marble.

I'm not concerned about heat from the burners, just were (I think) heat is escaping from the oven at the back of the range.

I can always have the base cabs built at 25 or 26" to leave a little more space back there, but I'd rather go with 24, and have to decide today.

Many, many thanks!

Rest easy madeline. Your marble backsplash will be just fine behind your island trim on your wolf. I had installed many marble backsplashes behind many pro ranges including wolf and never heard of any issues.

Tyguy- thanks as always! Do you install the range pretty much flush up against the back wall/backsplash, or do you pull it forward a little and build extra deep cabinets so there can be a strip of marble countertop behind it? (to create a space between the island trim/heat and marble)

    Thanks!!!

Hi madeline...no problem at all. I can tell that you are very excited about your kitchen and I think that is great!
I would most certainly push the range right up to the wall, your marble will be fine. I made sure that my cabinetry lined up right to the millimeter with the front of the stoves BOX, not the oven door. The oven door and control panel above it should sit proud. Also make sure that gas lines etc are places as to not interfere with getting the range all the way against the wall. To tell you the truth I think it would look a bit strange to have the range sit out from the wall with the 4 inch strip of marble behind it.

Are you still going with marble tops? I love to hear people gutsy enough to do marble in their kitchens. So many people are scared to do it because of maintenance etc, but it is just so gorgeous. What about cabs? Painted or stained? Framed or framless? Is the look you are going for traditional? Or more contemporary?

So glad for the advice, Ty. Thanks as always for taking the time to help!

Are pics of your kitchen posted on the forum?

My marble is Vermont Danby, and my cabs are painted BM Acadia White. Marble backsplash behind the range, but doing the fun Ann Sacks tile in pic below on all other backsplashes. Some might think that's gutsy, too ;-).

Transitional look...very clean, with some glass-fronted cabs and pops of color here and there.

Raised panel cabs everywhere except the focal point, where we did something a little different.

    Thanks again!!

Madeline....I have not posted any pics in kitchen forum yet. I will when I am complete, which I believe will be by the end of march. I am looking forward to seeing your posts along the way as well.

My advice would be to run the hood when you're high heat roasting (especially meat) in the oven. I had a client whose backsplash stained from that. With a lot of elbow grease, we removed the stains, and the using the hood eliminated the problem. The oven vents through that island trim.

Read the Wolf installation manual for your range re back-guards vs. backsplashes vs. combustibible wall construction materials. Many higher power ranges require back-guard risers to protect the backsplash, and even if the backsplash is indestructible, the distances to combustible material (including into the wall) have to be met by material selection or by protective devices. This is in the Residential Building Code usually part of one's municipality's Building Code.

It ain't called 'island trim' just for the fun of it.

We have a wolf gas oven range and a marble backsplash. The range top vents have stained our backsplash and there are stripes of brown where the vent holes line up with the backsplash. We've tried to clean it with marble cleaners but it doesn't remove the stains. I'm wondering if there's a filter that needs to be replaced/installed within the oven to reduce the staining exhaust. Unfortunately i haven't found anything online to help.

Yikes. I’m so sorry! We have the same set-up except we have dual fuel so the ovens are electric. Does anyone know if this makes a difference?
