The recent cold weather has given us a chance to see how well our passive solar design works.

I arrived at the house site at noon yesterday to find the inside temperature 62 degrees, while the outside temperature never got above 30. We have the heat pump set to 60, since we aren't quite ready to move in yet. I left about 5 pm. During that five hours, the heat pump never kicked on, and the inside temperature climbed as high as 65.

This with no living heat (showers, cooking, etc) and a couple of subs and myself going in and out of the house and letting the cold air in much more frequently than would be normal. With us living there, I feel it would have been at least two or three degrees higher.

I shot the thermostat photo at 4:33.

We also passed final electrical yesterday. Some final trim work, final paint work, deck railing, and we should be able to move in. Hopefully, we will be in before the end of the month.

It feels like we are creeping along now, but we are closer than we were 5 years ago!! lol Hopefully we will be in by the end of this month Granite came in last monday!!

bigkahuna- looks like you're getting a lot of ?'s. Can you tell me about the wood floor? Do you know if it is a particular brand of prefinished or site-finished wood? What species/brand/stain/finish perhaps? I'm looking for similar flooring based on what I can tell in the pic.

Fish, Im still checking and waiting for answers on some of paint and stain questions. Hes not in town at the moment. The wood is maple on the cabinets Not sure of stain. Paint is sherwin Williams but not sure of color yet. The floor is Bellawood 3/4"x 5" Brazillian Cherry prefinished. from Lumber Liquidators. If you go this route watch them for periodic sales to get a better price. They seem to have them every few months. I think you can even talk to them and have them call you when its about to go on sale. Not sure but if not its best to check back every so often. My GF and her brother started shopping early when I was designing and kept close tabs on sales. They shopped ebay for many appliances at up to 50% off, plumbing fixtures/ faucets, lighting fixtures, cabinet and door hardware, sinks ipe decking( web not ebay) to save quite a bit of money!

Thanks for the paint color bigkahuna - I will be off to get it once I dig myself out of the driveway!

We're moving ahead nicely. Insulation prep work is done and plasterboard is up on the ceilings of 2nd floor. Insulation to finish next week, then plastering for the rest of January. The exterior didn't get finished up comletely, but we have it adequately weatherproofed. Still need some trimwork around the front porch and some stonework.

Beautiful house fish. I really like your windows. You are just a little ahead of my build. The weather here has really slowed things up the past week but temps are supposed to increase next week. Since last month we've done a little more stone and they've started the stucco under my back porch. Also the geothermal system is almost complete. They've done a bit more roofing. My wide angle lens distorts things a bit but for the most part the house is straight.

Wow- all of these homes are beautiful! We hopefully closing on our house within the next week. The house is basically done, everything except for the carpeting. Unfortunately the mortgage stuff is going slower than it should be so we are just sitting waiting. Once we are in and done I will post some pictures.

susienj- would you mind telling me where you purchased the chandy in your daughter's room? I have too little princesses who I would love to purchase similar chandeliers for in their rooms. Is it from RH or pbkids?

Eyesofgreen, Your build is coming along nicely! Such a beautiful house. On your fireplace, did you use real stone or is that cultured? It turned out great!

    some nice Mcmansions in here!
My stone is man made by Premier stone.
We also used it outside the greatroom on the octagon and dormers.

Wow, so many beautiful homes on here!! Ours isn't a Mcmansion by any means, but I'll share anyways.:-)

Well, let's see, this past week we:

    Finished spray foam upstairs
Started & Finished Hanging drywall upstairs
Finished Electrical on outer walls on Main Floor
    Finished spray foam Main Floor
(our spray foamer will be gone for about two weeks so had to push electrical a bit to get it done before he headed out of town)

    Coming up week:
    Finish Electrical on Main Floor
Start & Finish hanging drywall on Main Floor
Might start mudding and taping drywall upstairs

I think we will just skip the electrical on the lower level, just use flashlights and lanterns :-P

Wow! What beautiful homes! I'm going to call my little place a McCottage....

mitri89- Beautiful cabinetry; I love the wainscoting. I can't wait to see it finished. Keep the pictures coming!

Here are a few pictures. We're actually into the last week or so of building, but these were the pictures that I can easily access.

Here's the house. It's a one level ranch.

Here's the backsplash being grouted in the kitchen.

Here's a view of the front entry from the living room.

This is the fireplace. We haven't picked out our mantle yet.

Adella- my dream house! I wanted a larger ranch but no one in our area builds ranch houses any more :( -- BEAUTIFUL- l love your backsplash-- send more pics!!

    we are progressing
kitchen cabinets are being installed, they are tiling master tub and shower/still working on Pecan Hardwood flooring & painting.

    Susienj, Thanks for the compliments.

Ranches aren't common in new construction here either. We just built what we wanted. We had to modify the roof line to fit into the neighborhood.

Here are a few more pictures that I took today.

    This is the back patio.

This is the living room. We have a 18.5' ceiling.

This is the view of the kitchen/breakfast nook from the living room. I think cleanup is done this week.

This is the view in the house from the front door.

This is the view from the breakfast nook.

    Here is the floor plan.

    Adellabedella,

I love your backsplash in your kitchen, would you mind sharing the name of it and perhaps the manufacturer?

    Thanks, Joe

    Joe,

The backsplash is a 4x4 tile by Emser. The color is "golden sand". I'm not sure if it is classified as a slate or a quartzite.

    Adellabedella,

    I appreciate your quick response!

Just getting started on a log home- here's what we're building:

Electric service is just being run up to the property, about 3600'. Clearing the site and excavation is supposed to start on Monday (1/25)

Starting a blog to keep track of the construction. Some of the interiors in this thread are unbelievable, hope we do as well.

Love the log cabin. I am thinking that is what I should have done, thinking that might be my next one... you know, the one I build after I have sworn that I will never build again! But I am thinking more like 2 rooms for the next one ...

Love everyone's kitchens! I am thinking mine might be too small :-( but for no more than I cook, it should be adequate. Let's hope so anyways.

    Great progress everyone!

gopintos- your house looks great, enjoyed your "home" page, cute.

What size of fish tank are you setting up in the new place? Saw the framing you're putting in place, we have 90 gallon saltwater tank and we're still trying to decide where to place it in the new house. In the basement would be easiest where we're going to eventually finish off but wouldn't get as much viewing if it's down there? At our current house, we have the tank on the first floor with hoses to the basement that lets us drain some water every few weeks and refill with salt water. We also have an RO unit set up down there that keeps the saltwater tank topped up between the bigger water changes- I sure don't plan to go back to lugging water up and down the stairs.

Looks like you're in the "home" stretch, take care.

    "HOME" stretch, equally cute :-)

The tank is 150 gallon. 2 feet deep, and I forget how tall and wide. It will be freshwater. We beefed up the floor joists a little since we knew where it was going.

I think I will enjoy the location. It will be framed like a piece of art on the foyer side, with either a bench or some chairs beside it, and then the back side, will be built into the cabinets in the kichen office and I will be sitting at the table/desk facing it quite often.

Yes I can finally see things moving along again. The past two weeks have been amazing and so good for my morale :-) Scarry too though. Worried now about how it will all come together. :-?

    Susienj,
would you mind sharing the DD chandy in her bedroom? where did you get it? It is darling!

    Everyone, such nice homes here!

We've spent a lot of time shoveling out the house as we raced the weather to get the roof buttoned up. Now waiting on standing seam metal roof in Feb,, basement floor pour next week and chimney construction mid-Feb. We're doing entry and garage doors and windows now.

DaveMartin88- I am really looking forward to seeing the progress of your home. My husband and I are in the VERY early stages of building and this is the exact type of home we have in mind.

To everyone on this forum, thank you all very much for posting all of your ideas and sharing the information so openly. It is such a pleasure to look at all the houses and different ideas.
May you all be blessed and your homes be filled with Love and Joy!
    Thank you all again!

I started a separate thread where I'll try to post updates, link is below. We're supposed to break ground on Monday if all goes as planned, permits were completed this week.

torik, feel free to send me an email (just add @yardlogsawing.com to my user name above) and I can share the floor plans if you're interested.

chandy is from Pottery Barn Kids- MIA! absolutly her favorite part of her bedroom- we love it

Thanks davemartin88! So how did the ground breaking go?
Can you tell me how many bedrooms are in the floor plan of your log home?

One day rain delay but we started clearing on Tuesday- I was there all day with my chipper/shredder cleaning up brush and we're back up there tomorrow (Thursday). Hope to have the clearing completed and starting to excavate for the basement next week. We're also having a foundation and slab poured for a 3 car garage/workshop but not sure when we'll be able to build on that foundation. It was a lot of fun, the bog is update with a couple of pictures but not a lot to see yet.

We've told our builder that we're not in a hurry to get the house done so I'm sure there will be fits and starts of activity. My wife has one more school year to work before she can retire so this will be a second house for about a year or so.

We're going with two bedrooms- the original plan had 3 but we expanded the master on the first floor with a larger walk in closet. There will be a guest room with it's own bath on the second floor as well.

Thanks for asking, off to bed as will have to leave about 6 am to get there when the rest of the crew shows.

    Adellabedella,

Love your house! Would you mind sharing what species of wood you used for your posts on your porch? And what size are they? Thanks!

Pps7, the posts are cedar. According to my dh, some are 6"x6" and some are 8"x8".

torik, I posted pics of our floor plan in the WV Build thread that I started, didn't want to post them twice. As FYI, the house is being built by Snowy River Log Homes, out of Hedgesville, WV. Their web site is still being built but the link is below.

On the plan section of their site, our house is called the Cranberry II (not my choice, lol). We started with the Cranberry I and changed the downstairs to have one larger bedroom with a small office and bumped out the wall to make the kitchen larger. We've made a few other changes along the way but gives you the idea.

bigkahuns- can you tell me the kitchen cabinets color and style and floors?

    thanks

Crazyone... Maple cabinets (custom) The cabinets were glazed with "I think" dark walnut stain /glaze Not sure other than that sorry.

Floors are Bellawood 5" Brazillian Cherry

Ramor, What kind of stone did you use? It is beautiful!

    Thanks kbenefield,
I was hoping someone would like it as much as we do. I had to do a lot of looking to find it. It comes from an Arkansas quarry owned by Schwartz Stone. We tried to match the stone on Rhodes College. The stone comes from the same quarry that Rhodes uses. I think our stone masons are doing a pretty good job, its not just the stone but the way it is laid that I think gives it sort of a unique look.
