My Toto Got Clogged!!

We recently bought 2 Toto toilets, to replace toilets that were not water-saving, on recommendations from friends who have had them for along time and told us how satisfied they were with them. Our plumber also recommended them as the best. Our old toilets would clog occasionally and we had to use a plunger to unclog them. And we were delighted to see that our Toto toilets did not clog, until this morning . . .

I think this was an unusual occurrence, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. My Toto toilet clogged for the first time this morning, and the experience has taught me one thing: Toto toilets are very resistant to clogging, much more resistant than other toilets. BUT, on the rare occasion when they do clog, unclogging them is more difficult than with old fashioned toilets that are not water-saving, in other words, toilets that use a good deal more than 1.6 liters of water per flush. I had to force the plunger about 30 times (I lost count) before the clog cleared.

So the motto of this story is: If you have a Toto, you probably don't need that old plunger any more. But don't throw it away. Keep it in the basement or the garage, just in case.

    Which model did you get?

Ultra Max. These are one piece toilets with "soft close" seats. We are really very pleased with them. I assume, and hope, that what happened today is an unusual occurrence. I would not hesitate to recommend them.

I only asked because (as I'm sure you know)different Toto's have different flushing mechanisms. That one's got the G-Force. (I have it too and I love it) Our powder room Toto is "lesser" power and has been clogged before. I want to replace it with a Drake.

The same week we installed our Ultra Max, our septic tanks (3 of them) as well as all the lateral lines were cleaned. The tanks had been cleaned once before and the lateral lines, never. We've lived here 26 years. With my vow to use yeast down the drains once a month, the new Toto and clean tanks, I'm hoping to be clogged free forever :) I love our new Ultra Max and can't wait to replace DH's old toilet with a Toto using the G-max flushing system. I'm not a plumber but wouldn't the conditions of the existing lines have something to do with clogging?

Or is it G-Max? Whatever - super duper suction.

I have a Toto Soiree ADA in the master bath. It has Toto's new cyclonic action. It has never been clogged in the year we have owned it. My Kohler clogged all the time. I replaced two other toilets with a Toto Ultra Max ADA and a Toto Drake. So far it has been a pleasure.

Heck, when my Kohler got clogged using a plunger almost never worked. I had to use a snake--far more effort. So my attitude is that if the worst clog I ever get requires a plunger I'll be a happy man:-)

Our Kohlers are 26 years old and in that amt of time, I bet they haven't clogged 6 times between them. Clogging hasn't been an issue. I just wanted an excellent quality toilet (and one that used less water) to get us thru the rest of our lives here.

Monicakm, can you explain the yeast????? Thanks!! Christy :)

It kills/eats the bacteria and sludge to help keep septic tanks cleaner longer. Rid-x is a product that is supposed to do the same thing but according to the septic cleaner guy, it's worthless, not to mention costly. I've known a lot of people who swear by the yeast and so does the septic guy. Put a package in one toilet and the kitchen sink once a month.

We have 2 Totos, a Sanigloss Drake and an Ultimate, and both have clogged. There are times that it happened when we put stuff in the john that we shouldn't have (lots tissues, baby wipes, etc). The other thing that's happened to cause clogs is what I call 'short-stroking' when you flush.

If you just push down the lever to the bottom and let go, in a quick motion, the flapper doesn't stay fully open for long enough to get a good flush. If I'm worried at all about it clogging, I hold the lever down until the trap glug-glugs. Have never had a problem when doing that. You have to think about it, though, and even I'm not 100% perfect at that.

Thull: I think you solved the mystery in our house. We have two Toto Ultramaxes and so far, our GS has been the only one to clog them several times. We've accused him of using too much toilet paper, which he vehemently denies. Poor kid, we've been laughing and joking about the situation. We just couldn't figure out why he has been the only one to clog the Totos.

(Of course, our old standard toilets seemed to clog weekly, so we were not too disappointed).

One great solution is to use a separate bidet (if you have the room). You only wipe a couple of times and go to the bidet and get squeaky clean. For those without the room the Toto washlet line, while expensive---from $400 to ~$1,000 depending on feature set--is a great solution. It is incorporated into the seat and you use the controls to do their job. Generally more expensive than a bidet, but it is super convenient.

I have a separate bidet in the master and a washlet in my son's bathroom. I used to have problems with him stuffing the toilet with too much toilet paper--I figured he must own stock in P & G (Charmin'). Now he finds it fun to do his ablutions right where he is sitting--or would that be s-itting:-) Look ma--no more clogs!

Of course if you have someone that can "pinch a loaf" the size of a baby's arm there are no guarantees:-)

    Thull and Aslander,
I vaguely remember that there is a way to adjust the water level in the tank. If you get a moment, give Toto a call and they can walk you through it. I don't have to hold down the lever on my Toto Carlyle to get it to flush. Let us kow what they advise.

    Good luck!

"It kills/eats the bacteria and sludge to help keep septic tanks cleaner longer."

Yeast is a food that the bacteria thrives on, bacteria eats sludge.

Four children and one clogged the toilet repeatedly, also used a half a roll of paper. Any connection?

Here is what I found when researching this additive, "Yeast can cause frothing and excessive activity in the septic tank, preventing normal settling of solids and coagulation of greases. This agitation forces solid waste into the drainfield and by clogging the soil, shortens its life."
I think I'd skip that one.

I had the same problem with my Toto this morning. I poured about 1/2 cup of Dawn in the bowl, followed by 2 cups of very hot water, and problem gone. The soap lubricates the stuck, er, object.

I have a toto wall hung with a gebiret flush system, weve had this toilet for 12 years and no clogs but now my 7 year old grandaughter is a big pooper and uses alot of tissue and clogs toilet regularly. plungers arent effective so my solution is to get a large 5 liter bucket fill it with water from the shower them pour it down the toilet and it clears the clog, sometimes it requires more than one five liter bucket, but its better than calling a plumber.

I fill a five liter bucket and pour it in toilet and repeat process until clig clears.. usually takes four full buckets, better than calling a plumber. its a trick that my toilet installer told me since they dont make plungers for these toilets

I have a Toto washlet and it is about six months old and we have had to plunge it 10 times. The toilet we had before was a basic Kohler and never needed to plunge it. My theory is this is a smaller toilet and a smaller plumbing and therefore, easier to get clogged.

I read through all these posts and the only thing that comes to mind, other than the pipes / trap is smaller, is the flushing “power” because it is a drought friendly product.

    Anybody else have this problem?

I have a wall hung Toto with a geberiet flush kit. my grandaughter plugged up toilet, i got a 5 liter homedepot orange bucket and filled it up, I poured a total of two bucket full into the bowl and it cleared it. It’s rare that this happenens but my plumber told me thats how he gets these type of toilets moving again.

@EC_Shaw- so a washlet is just a bidet seat that can be added on to any toilet (we have one that came from Costco). Dumb question- is the toilet itself a Toto? Would be helpful to know what model the toilet itself is (this one? https://www.totousa.com/washlet-with-smart-toilet-g450-10-gpf-and-08-gpf).

The size of the "pipes/trap" doesn't have anything to do with whether the toilet is low flow or not. I think that Toto actually originated 3" traps (bigger) to flush better with lower flows.

When our toilets (a Drake and an Ultramax, both 20 ish years old) clog, I use a plunger. If I dumped in a bucket of water, they'd just overflow. The plunger doesn't perfectly cover the opening at the bottom, but I can gently push the air out of the plunger once it's underwater, then quickly push in/out several times to get things moving without a giant mess. I use one with an extended snout rather than the classic hemisphere type.

There are lots of reasons why a toilet could clog that may or may not be the toilet itself. Which toilet definitely a good starting point, if you didn't just come to broadcast/complain.

Toto is good but it is not clog proof. I bought a Caroma toilet. It has a 4 inch drain/trapway. It has been a month now and we have had zero clogs.

We’ve had Totos for a number of years and they have always clogged. It’s my belief that the clogging is related to the size and hardness of the ”deposit” being made. I read a book a long time ago with a character who kept a special knife on the back porch which he used to cut his ”deposits” into smaller pieces and I laughed and laughed … . Maybe He had a good idea.
