Look what DH got for a present!

DH is retiring from his job as an engineer for Union Pacific Railroad. He was out at the Superintendent's office today, and they gave him a big package. I figured it would be a duffle bag or a beverage cooler--but look what we found when we opened it up! Couldn't believe it! LOL I just pulled this together quickly so I could show you all.

Can you believe it was a set of dishes????? I think DH must have told the secretary about my passion for dishes! They are really nice with gold rims and the Union Pacific emblem on them.

How terrific Luvs! That is a nice retirement gift that you both can enjoy. Was your DH a locomotive engineer? That is what my DH does for Canadian Pacific Railway. That is a hard lifestyle without the ability to plan for anything as they never know exactly when they have to go to work or how long they will be gone. I'll be glad when my DH retires - hope HE gets some dishes!

WOW, what a surprise! I know you are thrilled to pieces.
What a sweetheart your DH is for telling his sec what YOU love. I bet HIS gift was the smile on your face and sparkle in your eyes when you opened the box.

    hugs, Karen

Wow! Those are really nice! You'll get a lot of good use out of them. Much better than a duffle bag or a cooler. ha Congrats! ~Anj

Surprisingly, DH seems to really like them--in fact he suggested that I do the dining room table with them so he could show them to DS and any friends who come by! Hmmm! Maybe he's gonna become a dishaholic too! Wouldn't that be great? LOL

I'm not usually into logos on things, but I think I will try to use these once a month or so for DH to enjoy. (And to remind him of how lucky he is to no longer have to work those long hours and deal with all the problems for his union members.)

DD, yes, he is a locomotive engineer. Just got his 30 years in so that he can retire! He has been a local chairman also for the last 28 years! Being local chairman helped with the time off part at least to some degree, but you are so right, they get called to work any time of the day or night and can work from 6 to 16 hours and never know which it will be! Can be really hard on marriages and families--luckily I had allot of training before hand--he was in the military for 11 years too! How long until your DH will get to retire? Tell him to stay safe, and bless you for always being there for him when he does get to be home. ;o)

    Oh, it's splendid, Luvs!

I always found great to have a railroad company emblem home: that's why I took some office tools away from the Wagons-Lits company when I left... by the time, some of them gain more value.

What a really cool gift, and even better that he liked them too! Your tablesetting is very nice, I am sure he will appreciate your using them in honor of all the hard work he put in with the company, I sure wish my work would do something like that!

Oh MY what a wonderful gift. Yeppers, DH's can become dishaholics too.....mine did, and if you had known him before he and I got together, (I had known him for 30 years or so previous to our dating)you would NEVER believe that he would be interested in dishes!!
My DS would be jealous of your wonderful dishes...he is a train collector and has train memorabilia decorating his shop!
Congrats to you DH and you two give each other a hug for us!

Luvs - does he ever say "Now move that caboose and put some food on the table"? Sorry...I'm bad!

What a unique and special retirement gift that's for both of you....and they look good too!
Also as my mom would - What a conversation piece to have!

You do realize that if he'd just been given a gold watch you wouldn't have had to wash it? LOL

Jim, you are too funny? That phrase would probably get him in allot of trouble and leave him with an empty tummy for the night! LOL He usually just says "What's for dinner?" to let me know he's getting hungry. ;o)

Actually glad it wasn't a gold watch--he has so many watches already. Engineers used to be required to have exact time and their watches had to be "certified" once a year, they've done away with that requirement now however. I do think these dishes will do best if handwashed beause of the gold band, and they say not for the microwave too.

Glad everyone enjoyed seeing them--I'll work on a better centerpiece next time, okay? ;o)

Luvs, I think that is a great idea to use your new dishes once a month or so and let the meal be a "celebration of his retirement" (you can always order in LOL!). It will be at least 10 more years of my DH's long trips (they are usually gone about 20-24 hours!) and variable hours of work before he retires. After 23 years of "the railroader life" though I'm used to it and actually enjoy all the "me" time I get while he is away. It makes us appreciate the time we can spend together when I'm not at work as well. Good for your DH being a local chairman, that is a lot of responsibility too. My DH has no desire to do that but really appreciates the ones here.
