Dishwasher steam damaging counter

I'm cross-posting to kitchens but thought I might get some help here, too.

We're keeping the old dishwasher. It's producing huge amounts of steam mid-cycle, causing water to bead up on the underside of the laminate counter. I even found some drips of water running down the inner sides of the dishwasher cabinets.

One piece of advice I found was to paint the underside of the laminate. With that much steam, though, I'm dubious how well painting will work.

The door of the dishwasher is flush with the cabinets on either side. Should I move the dishwasher out?

Do you have any other advice? Do you think something is wrong with the DW?

Many thanks,

Cate
