immediate help needed! our deck.

Hi-

We had a deck built in december/january. over the months, we've had several instances of boards popping up-and we found that screws were sheared in half.

what would make this happen? the contractor has been here to rescrew the boards several times, and says he has replaced all of them (the screws).

but it's obvious that they haven't all been replaced. we found 3 more screws that are sheared today-he's a good guy, and i think he contracted this work out to someone else. he's coming tomorrow and i don't know what to say to him.

i hope it's the hardware. he says he's bringing a rep with him.

what could be making the screws break? it's not heavy use-

Pull one of the suspect screws and take it to the hardware store and ask what it is.

From your limited description my Internet mind is going to drywall screws or something like that.

Are the boards cupping, twisting, moving? Or are the screws just breaking?

Is it wood, PT wood or a deck specific wood, like 5/4 cedar?

Is the decking stained or treated an all six sides or just on top?

Are the screws stainless, galvanized or ceramic coated?

How long are the screws?

Is the contractor a handy man type or does he specialize in decks, fences, sheds? Home builder contractors are notorious for not building very great decks unless they sub it out to a specialist or care enough to keep a crew that does know decks.

Without knowing the size of the deck, the type of decking and the type of screws no one can really help you.
