I think the main consideration should be how you use the room and which doors he the most 'traffic'. Is the piano for entertaining or practise? What do the 4 windows look at? Is this where you will watch tv? Where will people/guests mostly enter from?

It is hard to think through the options without this info. I would assume a combination of couch, chairs and perhaps a day bed/chaise would ensure all the access points don't feel blocked by furniture?

I suggest you purchase a sofa of 84" to no more than 90" long, and no deeper than 39", and place it facing the TV/fireplace.

Then buy two comfortable chairs, possibly small recliners. Do not get anything wider or deeper than 36". Place the chairs facing one another a couple of feet out from the sofa, closer to the TV/fireplace.

Acquire 2 small round tables to serve the 2 chairs, plus a good sized coffee table for in front of the sofa. I'd place a sofa table behind the sofa and put 2 lamps on it. You may have space left for a bench in front of the TV and fireplace area. But wait to see before buying one.

I suggest fairly neutral colors for the sofa and chairs. Buy a colorful rug, pillows and artwork for the color you'll want and need to add to the room.

I suggest a sectional, slipper/slender chair(s) with some texture/pattern and decorative ottomans/poufs. Keep furnishings neutral-and paint walls 2-3 shades darker than upholstered pieces. Thanks for all your comments - they were very helpful! j9rob, to answer your questions, most will enter from entry at bottom of stairs. The windows are southern facing a beautiful wooded area and our backyard. The piano is more of an heirloom than for practice or entertaining. And this is definitely the room where all will be watching TV.

I agree with all of the suggestions above. Since this is a family room I would also suggest adding a game table opposite the piano in front of the windows,overlooking the backyard. This would encourage a great card game, a family board game or a great place for a bar/appetizers for the "Big"game.It would also be a great place for seasonal decor when not in use.
