great price as long as the sealed system still is under warranty for 12 yrs.

only 1 yr warranty, 12 wont apply b/c of the age.
deal breaker or still worth it?

about 3 years ago, was the time that SZ got hold of some bad copper and it found it's way into either the evaporator or condensor(I forget which). A knowledgible
Marketing Mgr (as I recall) attributed this, at least partially, to the very low reliability ratings that Consumer Reports gave SZ. In fact one poster here, mentioned that both compressors on their fridge had to be replaced. I wouldn't gamble since you are going to be Warranty-less in a year, and I'm afraid to ask what it would cost to replace any of those parts that go defective , after a year.
At the time we bought, SZ was getting dinged by CR both for reliability and also lacking features that less expensive Fridges offered.
We took a look at the 48" built in Jenn-air, it was better lit, had 3 separate adjustments for different storage areas in the fridge compartment, and gave an actual readout of both freezer and fridge temps---not what you have them set to, but what the temps actually are.
I suspect SZ has caught up both in reliability and features now, but you are looking at a 3 year old one.
Anyway we bought the Jenn-air, it has been trouble free for more than 3 years now, and we still like all the xtra little conveniences that most didn't offer 3 years ago.

    Good Luck!!

If I were going to get a 736 anyway I'd go ahead and assume the risk. As you are still ahead $$$ wise even if the whole sealed system needs to be replaced.

If you are stretching to get a SZ and if necessary , doling out $1000-1500 in the next 5 yrs would strain your budget then pass.

I'd have to check but NEW units, those that haven't been sold should still have the system warranty even if they are a few years old.

    FYI for what it's worth!
My friend had her 20 year old Subzero built in compressor rebuilt. She was NOT ready to redo the kitchen and she felt that this was a better option than getting a new fridg and dealing with panels that may or maynot match/fit...

It cost her $1700 for the rebuild.

Also if you purchase it using a credit card, check your Benefits Guide because you may be eligible for an additional year warranty.

However, make sure you price out the panels because it may not end up being that much of a savings if you have to spend alot on them. And make sure you have a dedicated circuit with the right ampz and voltage located in the right place for the fridge. I just bought a Sub Zero and I had to have that done for about $125.

    about to pull the trigger...
    panels are $1100.oo
    total will be $4500.00
unit has basically sat the last 3-4 yrs in a display.
any issues with ocmpressors based on sitting dormant?
amex will double the 1 yr, so will have 2 yrs protection.
    deal or no deal?
    thanks!

above advice still stands. this is roughly 1/2 of new without panels.

eric, I am sure you have already made your purchase, or not, but, I purchased a SZ 736 off the floor also. I have had it for almost a year now, no problems at all. Time will tell. I got mine for 2999.00, then the panels were about $500.00 (had them made by a local cabinet door maker), then the painter charged 100.00 to paint them. One surprise I wasn't aware of, was the installation of the refrigerator and the panels was 450.00. BUT, MY SZ SURE LOOKS GOOD!! I love it, I am not sorry one bit for the extra money it cost.

    thanks everyone
indeed, we went with this deal.
will prob be abt 4-5 wks before it is installed as we need to mod some cabinets.
    will post pics when complete.

    As promised, a pic!
it took ages to get a kitchen designer on board, reconfigure cabinets, etc. but it think it was worth it!
