This is not normal, you should call the factory and explain your situation.

Ours gets warm, but definately not hot... I was concerned about my 14 month old getting burned and did a thourough checking of the doors and around the doors. The island trim on top of the range gets really hot, but I think it's designed to.

Call Capital and get it checked out!

Oddly enough the door on my FAR cheaper NXR barely gets warm.
Only place on the outside that gets hot is the little space at the bottom of the door between the door and the bottom kick plate. If you reach back to the back of that seam between the door and kick plate its hot.
but the door the window etc are cool enough to put your cheek to even after being on 350-400 for more than an hour.

So I would say a supposedly much better range should not be getting hot at all.

Thanks everyone. I have a call into Capital to get it checked out. I suppose I should have realized it wasn't "normal" before but it never occurred to me until it became an issue.

I have a self-cleaning Capital Precision. I bought it before the Culinarian was announced. One of the many things (rightly or wrongly) that scared me off the Bluestar was the fear of hot doors around young kids. My Precision's door barely gets warm (even when I forgot to turn the oven off and left it on broil right through dinner). I couldn't tell you if the non-self clean stays as cool or not.

We have a 36" CC - the door does not get hot - you may have a problem

Thanks! I wish I had realized this before, because it has always been like this and I thought it was normal and now I'm not under warranty.

So just to clarify for any Capital owners (so I don't waste the money on a service fee if nothing is wrong) - at the top of the door, there are the little vent-looking holes and then the little bar that curves around in a u shape. So, if I have my oven on ~400 for a few hours to roast a chicken, those are burning hot - and yours aren't hot at all (or warm at the most)??

I do have the self-clear Precision 36 inch 6 burner.

jett254 - - I suspect your range is normal. The responses here are referring to the front of the oven door and that's what people thought you were referring to.

I can't speak to the Capital but I do have a DCS and although the front of the door doesn't get very hot, there are places around the door that do. I know that the area between the bottom of the door and the toe kick get very hot if you stick your finger in there. I not sure about the top of the door but it wouldn't surprise me. If the front of your door doesn't get very hot then I suspect there's nothing wrong. You really do need to keep your kids from exploring the range when it's on.

Must something with the self clean. Our manual clean has the vents on top of the door, then the heat deflector, then the drip tray.

Sorry, I keep getting mixed up between self clean and manual clean. We don't have any automated clean cycle so mine is the self-clean. We have the vents on the top of the door, then the heat deflector and the drip tray. ratflinger - does yours get hot near the vents, heat deflector and drip tray when it has been on a while.

I'm totally fine with keeping my little guy away from the oven. I just want to know if it is behaving normally before I spent $80 on a service call I don't need....
