Would it be in your budget to run the stone all the way up and do a simple wooden mantle shelf to match the cabinet? I think that would be a good solution.

You could glaze over the white, to tone it down! It looks shiny, you might like it better if it weren't so shiny. I think you may find you like it find once you get some great art and accessories placed. Or you could go dark like the shelves setting becide it- The white will be a much fresher feel, the dark will feel more rustic.

I think that you need to finish before you say that it doesn't go well with anything..In fact in goes with the white crown..what colour was it before you painted?
The reason why it looks so off is you haven't attempted to tie anything together..it just looks empty..The large cabinet is empty..Add some white to the cabinet..Add some glass..
Finish decorating then send us a picture..I am sure it will look great..

Thanks for the advice. The house will be finished in a few weeks and I will decorate and send pictures. I have a painting of my grandchildren being done for over the fireplace. After I see that I might glaze the mantle.
