Does anyone have long term care insurance?

My husband and I are trying to decide if this is something we should do. Any thoughts?

Sorry, I don't have any advice but I wanted to say that must be some bike trip you're planning if you'll also need long term care insurance (your two posts are one on top of the other on my screen at the moment). Good luck - with both things.

LOL! I thought about that as I did the postings! I wondered if anyone would comment along that line.

We are in the process of this. After helping care for a terminally ill parent and overseeing in-home care and then assisted living for my grandmother, I saw how important this can be. Many financial advisors recommend long-term care insurance. Knowing the cost of care, I can see how it would not take long to spend major $$$ in caring for someone. My FIL, on the other hand, cashed out his (paid) life insurance policy and invested that money. After his death, my MIL took out the long-term care insurance. I am eternally grateful that my grandfather left my grandmother good financial shape. We should not ever have to worry about financing her care. She is almost 95. I hate to think of someone younger having these problems. Long-term care could financially devastate a family.

We found the best price through a credit union we belong to.

We do (we're in our mid 60's) & have had it for several years now. The price has recently sky-rocketed, though, and our financial advisor is checking into other options. Always a hard decision whether to save & invest for things like this, or opt for the insurance.

I do. I initially obtained it through my employer, but when that was discontinued I had the option to continue the policy on my own and I chose to. The company is Monumental Life, and I understand their reputation to be excellent.

I got it a couple years ago - I'm 54 now. It was offered through Prudential with an open enrollment through my employer. Employer does not pay for it but I took advantage of the open enrollment as I don't know that I'd qualify otherwise. It's a decent plan though not over the top - currently about $900 per year.

Both DH and I did a lot to help our parents in their later years and since we have no kids there will be none of that if we live to be old. We'll be paying for help. DH's mother was in a nursing home for 11 years after suffering several mini strokes and his grandmother was in for 20 years after suffering a massive stroke. My grandmother was also in for many years. I hope I never end up there but if I do I'd like to somehow be able to pay for it myself and not end up being covered by taxpayers. My FIL paid for MIL - had LTC insurance for the first few years then self funded. I admired their ability to do that and would hope to be able to do the same.

I am a long term care specialist, so of course I am a believer in LTC insurance, but it does not always make sense for everyone. Kiplinger has a great video on their website, general and not company specific, if you are looking for some background information. Ultimately I tell my clients they need to go with what they are most comfortable with what they decide, insurance or not, and be aware of the risks involved with either decision.
