Good question. I'd consult an architect, but they might in turn decide to consult a structural engineer. When we put an addition on our house, both our architect and GC (i.e. together) brought in a structural engineer to consult on taking out a supporting structural wall. And some architectural firms have structural engineers on staff or that they consult regularly.

Going along with feeny's comment, an architect would provide you with an overall vision to maximize the potential of the house on the site, while an engineer would inform you how any slopes or drainage issues could be resolved.

I agree with the great advice from Feeny and David, and would add that if you can find an architect that has a lot of experience with landscape architecture also, that would be a big plus

Thank you all very much! My husband and I have found over the years that we are wayyyyy better off having a pro plan to fall back on. When we try to wing it ourselves... Well we have had mixed results. ;-).
