20 yrs ago you most likely had some sort of urethane finish but not aluminum oxide. You should be able to refinish easily as Glen states.

glen, can you share what product you use now for recoating the Pattern Plus?

BonaKemi Traffic in either gloss or semigloss.

The Pattern Plus must be prepared properly for this to work. All contaminants, including the polish that Hartco sold for the product, need to be removed. Then, if you use Traffic, you need to use Bona Prep and a maroon pad to further prepare the surface.

Yes. In 2007, we had our 21 year old hartco acrylic impregnated floors redone. They were in pretty bad shape after raising a family and multiple pets. I'm embarrassed to say that in some places the finish was completely gone...when you spilled liquid on the them, the liquid went directly into the wood. We had a floor refinishing man come look at them..he came highly recommended and said yes, we could do it. The downside is you have to move all your furniture out of the area, and leave the house for five days. The upside...the floors look brand new and the cost was $1.25 per square foot. He recommended an oil based finish and we let him do his thing. He also recommended we take care of them using Bona products. Of all the things we had to do that year for the major 20 year updating (new heat/AC, appliances, counter tops, paint,etc...you know the drill), having him redo the floors was by far the least expensive thing we had done and had the biggest impact. I do suggest that you get an experienced person...this guy goes all over the state and is a real craftsman. At the same time that we did all this, we added a downstairs MBR and put Hartco acrylic impregated floors in there...he matched the stain to the new floor perfectly. We did have a hard time finding Hartco floors this time...they were darned expensive, but worth it.

The Hartco Acrylic floor is one of the best floors I have ever had. I have a retail store in Michigan and the abuse that it takes is tremendous.

The beauty of refinishing this floor is that sanding is not required or recommendend. Unless a floor person is familar with this product they will often suggest that the floor needs to be sanded.

To refinishing the floor:

1. Rent of slow speed buffer for Home Depot.

2. Get a black scrubbing pad and use just enough mild cleaner (water/vinegar) to scrub.

3. Once the floor is dry-apply spray tone-with a flat paint type applicator. Be sure to put enough down so the spray tone soaks into the wood. You may need several applications.

4. Let the spray tone dry for 24 hours so it soaks in. You may walk on it within 2-3 hours in stocking feet.
Be sure to have plenty of ventilation. The odor will subside in less than a day.

5. Use Spray shield and a high speed to shine it up.

Since Armstrong bought Hartco you might also see this flooring marketed as Armstrong Commercial. There are only one or two mills left that use acrylic impregnated flooring.

Is there a product that will take grease stains out of Hartco acrylic floors?

I had a nail polish spill. Daughters used nail polish remover to wipe it up. Hence the finish is off. Discolored. How do I fix this?

Is this acrylic impregnated or acrylic impregnated with a film-forming finish over? If only acrylic impregnated, repair would be simple using sandpaper, Hartco spray tone and then the sacrificial finish used on the product.

We had water damage over the winter while out of town. The Hartco floor is stained from a copper tub that sat on it with the water for 2 weeks. Can it be refinished, or new flooring needed? Thanks for any info

Oh ugh. Need to resurface, refinish or replace hartco. I have some grease stains too. Any ideas?

Carolpol you could just have them refinished (just as if they were regular floors).

1. I don't think they recomend this as the top layer is thin. They suggest using Spray Tone ( which I don't think u can find). You might use some fine steel wool an Spray Tone and it blends the colors . I have a bottle I have used from several times. This time 2/1/23 found it to be solid in bottom. Tried several things to get back but no luck.
2. I also had some water damage in front of sink and the boards cuped on the sides. I have some left over from previous but kept putting off. Last winter noticed the gaps get a little larger than smaller with weather. Used a heat gun lightly to make plyable, used a screw driver to force glue under edges a couple boards at a time. Have a couple real heavy weights I set on them a d used pin nailer in several areas. Took a few days to make sure glue was dry before moving to next. Turned out pretty good.
3. Fell in love with this product at a parade of homes. Saw many homes with different hardwood floors and due to all the traffic they looked pretty bad. They said they would redo the floors after. Came to a home with Hartco Pattern Plus and looked like they had already refinished. Assked about it angd they said no, just the way it is made. Little more expensive but decided that was the floor for us. Just cleaned, waxed and couple spray tone fixes. Probably over 20 years.
