Need help with accent wall

I recently moved into a house with no fireplace and a big red accent wall. I faux finished kitchen and living area but I'm stuck as to what to do with this wall. Should I continue the same finish as the rest of the room or what color should I paint it? I'm trying to go for an old world feel without overpowering the area. Any suggestions?

I think the colors you have chosen are great, and you did very well with your artwork too! I think the problem with that wall is the fact that the tv sits lower than the artwork beside it on either side. That is creating this big dead space on that wall above the tv. I think what you need to do is create a "accent" on your accent wall. I would recommend creating a wide - floor to ceiling - vertical stripe centered behind your tv console at least the width of the console or a few inches wider. There are so many materials you could use here!! Stacked stone or brick, a rich paneled leather back drop, glass tile, rustic wood, a faux finish, be creative!!! But that would add the height you need in the center of the wall! Because the materials I'm sugggesting are decorative enough to stand on their own, do not top the tv with another piece of artwork or mirror let the texture provide the rich accent and keep your tv low (where it is) because tv's that are up too high are said to cause uncomfortable neck pain to viewers who are sitting lower. Also, I love the red wall but that stark white cold air return just jumps right out at you, try painting it the same color as the wall to make it fade into the background.

Hi agapegirl!

I am a tile manufacturer but I carry much more than just tiles and I have a few ideas for your room!

Firstly, I understand your goal towards an "old world" vibe but I am a fan of the pop of color. If you are wanting to totally get rid of the red, I would suggest using something that brings back the visual interest such as an engineered stone. We carry an interesting product called "FabriStone" which is essentially a wall covering that is UV and fire rated, and resistant to frost and atmospheric agents, as well as common domestic acids, detergents, etc. Below I have attached an example of colorings that would look good in your space. The downside of this is that it will be more difficult to hang pictures and such, however I believe that the wall itself would be a statement enough that the pictures are no longer necessary.

Another option would be our line of Leather Tiles. These are a really interesting alternative to many coverings and add a feel of luxury while maintaining a natural material. Burnt orange, butterscotch, red ocher - something to brighten the room without overpowering.

How about starting with a butterscotch and then adding a couple of thin layers of brown and gold glazes to add richness and depth.

That's funny you should mention butterscotch as I picked up a quart thinking to do just that and love the ideas of brown with golds! My fear was having the wall faux finished next to another wall with different color faux..

How much would a wall like that of the FabriStone cost (materials plus install). They might work for me too.

It will be fine as long as you work either the very same techniques with the different colors or a very subtle approach to the glazing. Just make sure there is enough contrast or you will look like you mixed the wrong batch of colors.

Red is an old world color; I suggest you do the room in red, not an accent wall which visually shrinks the room. :)
