Alternative Heating 101- suggestions please!

Hi all, I am involved w/ some people who are considering moving a sweet little old brick house that's only 700 s.f. or so including both floors (1 or 2 rooms on first floor & hall + 2 small rooms on the second floor). It will be used as a workshop or studio not a house.

Can you suggest ways of heating it which would be economical both for installation and use? There won't be any gas lines or electrical lines so it'll be like starting from scratch. Although it is in the city and so it would be possible I guess to run the lines if that was decided.

Solar might be possible since the roof would be facing south, but if it's 20 grand I'm not sure people will go for it. Bear in mind that my goal is to save this house and so I'm looking for economical and practical as much as anything...

I like the idea of corn furnace but it sounds like they're labor intensive-- how often do you have to refill? Wonder why you can't just have a giant hopper that doesn't run out so fast...? If its in the basement you wouldnt have to worry about how it looks or the space it takes up.
