window a/c compressor runs only 6 seconds

my 1yr old window a/c (ge,5100btu) is behaving strangly. I just moved to another house, and wanted to test my a/c. unit was outside in 30degree temps for 2 days; but has now been in my LR for 6hours in 75 degree temp. all functions seem to work, except that when I try to 'cool', the compressor comes on (in my unit there is a distinct buzzing sound) for only 6-7 seconds, then stops. after about 2 minutes, it comes on again, lasts 6 seconds, then stops. this is repeated. no cold air comes out. is there something I'm not thinking of regarding testing window a/c units inside the house, or could the compressor have failed? any help is appreciated. thanks.

Its way to cold, you should have kept it in a fairly warm room for several days before you did what you did. With any luck you didn't kill it but let it warm up first. Hey on the bright side, if you put away 10 dollars every week by the time the weather gets warm enough to need A/C you'll be able to buy a new one. :-)

    try a new capacitor

    Hello,
The overvoltage relay is probably bad. Replace the klixon, or use a 3-1 kit.

It's probably too cold. Remove the front louvered cover to
expose the cap tube. The one from the stat. remove the
rubber bumper from the front coil and pull the cap tube from the rubber. Hold the cap tube in your hand until you
feel that the tube is pretty warm. then turn the unit on. How long does it run ? If the stat is a snap action one
find yourself a portable heater with a fan, an old car warmer will do. Have it pointed to the area of the stat. Let it get good and warm. How long does it run ?

thanks everyone. as of right now, it's been in the LR for 26 hours at least 72 degrees. I just tried it again, set it at 68degrees, and hit cool. the compressor kicks in and stays on (the buzzing sound) for 10seconds. then goes off. it waits for 25seconds, then kicks in again for 7seconds. goes off, waits 25 seconds, and so on. keeps cycling that way. thanks. fyi-I have a 2nd unit that has been inside my house all winter, I brought it into the LR and tried the same thing; works perfectly.

took 'kalining' advise. unhooked the cap and held in my hand for a few minutes. started the a/c up, and the same thing happened. compressor cuts off in 8-9 seconds, then waits 20 or so seconds, then repeats.
