Purpose of Air Dry Function on Dryer

What is the purpose of the Air Dry function/mode on a dryer?

My apartment came with an old Kenmore Extra Capacity Dryer that has an "Air Dry" function. I understand that it doesn't blow hot air, but is this mode suppose to replace air drying/drip drying clothes?

    I use air dry and low temp. for linen and rayon.
