Are the retro tiles plastic or ceramic?

The current vynil floor is some ugly grey pattern , sorry I am not on the site, but will take another photo soon! Sooo, what to do with this color scheme, blue, black and brown, ugh!

The retro tiles are ceramic, the bathroom is in a great shape except the flooring is tired and grey random splattered pattern.

I would replace the floor with black and white floor tiles. ( either 50/50 or mostly white with a few back tiles added. ) Then replace the curtain with a white that has a large black floral motif. You could also consider Navy or yellow accents, but the shade will be tricky.

Home Depot has a great black square and white hexagon small floor tile with a style that fits the style of this bathroom. I would also paint the cabinet white. I love the original tiles!

First of all.... it's a rental. I too would go with Black or white tiles and get the blue curtains out of there (shower and window). White window blind (not curtain with waves of fabric) same color as the wall will make the will make the room appear bigger. As for Shower curtain – It is a rental so if you feel you as the land lord needs to provide one – also black or white.

Agree with everyone on going for black and white--on the floor, curtains, shower curtain. Paint the vanity black (or white, if you prefer) so it goes with the blue, white, and black palette. Even black and white checkerboard linoleum on floor would be good, if you can't afford tile.

I also need to do something about the kitchen. Blue curtains will be taken off , how to spice it up? On a small budget! There is awful linoleum tile on the floor that I need to replace. What colour so it would transition well from the adjacent light hardwood floor?

Bath - paint white all that is brown. B&W tile, white window treatment and shower curtain.
Kitchen - don't worry about the hardwood unless you can afford to bring it on into the kitchen. You could do large B&W squares here to continue the bath theme. I like cordless blinds in the kitchen with a pretty valance. It no need for blinds, just use valances. Country Curtains has nice ones.

Irenahs, This looks like it is the same house... so being a rental, I have been a landlord also, I would pick a linoleum - that has some color to it and get it installed. Then because you do want to keep the budget down.... pick a wall color that compliments the flooring and go for it, paint the walls. Paint is a great way to freshen any space. But pick the vinyl first because that is where your cost is going to be ... then paint. Good Luck. Maddie

I agree, black and white flooring in vinyl or tile, or...I once used a vinyl that was a ringer for hardwood flooring, came in many colours. Renters like the look of wood but don't take care of it.

The thing to keep in mind is that this is a rental. I'd go with the economy-priced vinyl flooring that looks like hardwood, as suggested by Sara Parker (above) in both kitchen and bath. It minimizes stains, dings and dirt. Put another coat of clear polyurethane varnish over the wood vanity and under the sink in the bathroom to make both easier to clean and more resistant to water. Paint gets nicked and dinged even by the fussiest renters and has to be repainted ad nauseum.

For bath curtains, plain white permanent press cotton-polyester blend, no ruffles. Opaque for privacy. Or a blue and white stripe. You can order them from JC Penny or Sears. For shower curtain, plain white (but not the cheapest flimsiest possible) from Target or some bed-bath store. You want them to be able to throw the shower curtain in the washing machine and you'll be replacing it for each new tenant.

For the kitchen, I agree on a washable valance over the sink but nothing over the stove due to fire danger. Make sure you install a kitchen fire extinguisher, by the way, as well as the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors required by law.

It looks lovely, clean and bright. Let the renters bring their own decor to the kitchen.

bathrooms take a beating with renters even when they are conscientious in every other room. there is no amount of caulk to substitute for tile and grout. However, you can still end up with floor damage with both. If you can find someone to cove the linoleum and you prefer that price - go with lino. If you can afford the tile -- go that route and buy at least one extra box of both colors if you do blk and white.

kitchen; the only thing you might want to do is paint the valances a light shade of a color in your new kitchen floor. maybe a grey wash, then choose the window covering you want. If first time renting; do a complete list of all rooms and their window coverings, appliances, and anything you think someone might take when they leave. Even if you have part of security deposit -- you would still have to replace. big hassle.

I agree on the idea for the black and white checkerboard tiles for the bathroom. A plain inexpensive tile such as a simple slate on the kitchen floor might work. The whole room would be spruced up by a change of door furniture. Brushed nickel might be nice.

You could also put in a laminate flooring that is the same color as your hardwood -- only a teeny bit more expensive than vinyl. Also new knobs on the cabinets - a cheap and easy fix. I would paint the walls a sunny yellow and get rid of those blue curtains.
