Thanks for help w/kitchen layout

I have been lurking on this site for months getting fabulous tips and information from all of you. I would appreciate some help! I am in month two of an almost whole house remodel. I am staying within the footprint of my house (1700 sq. ft) and updating foundation (major issues with that) and interior. I do not have a KD, and my architect and I have come up with the layout below. I cook everyday, not a gourmet chef, but love to cook and we casually entertain often (family of 4-2 kids 2 adults).

I am creating a great room that will have a kitchen and living area (living area not on attached plan)and we will have two nana type walls and a nana window over the kitchen counter that will open up our space to an outdoor deck/room. Please help me with this plan. Do you see any red flags? Here are my specific questions:

1) am I making a mistake by putting my oven so close to sink? The reason I did this is for more storage for pots and pans in island. I use cooktop more often.

2) I don't have room for double oven. I have never had one and haven't really missed it, but wonder if I should go for a convection microwave in island.

3)Th island is a combo island/kitchen table. We we need more formal dining, we can flip the table, put in leaves and situate it separately from island. My husband wants the island bigger and the capability to seat people around the island too. Is is too narrow to enjoy with the cooktop? The cooktop is 36".

4) I fell in love with this large stainless apron sink. Is it too big for the space?

5) I really like the materials I have chosen. Blue Lagos polished Ceasarstone on the back counter and amber vertrazzo w/patina on the island, recyled glass tiles for backsplash. Walnut or cherry (medium stain) for the wood. I am worried this will be dated in a few years?

Before I move forward with everything-What would you do differently?

Hard to tell dimensions...Would it be possible to post a 2D floorplan? How much room do you have to each side of the cooktop? Where will you store dishes, cups, and glasses?

I like the idea of separating the oven from the cooktop area so that you have all the room you need at your 'command center' as you cook. Am a little worried that the oven may inhibit the use of the cabinets to the left of the sink, and you have so little storage already.

Do you bake? Where do you envision doing those and other kinds of tasks? It's good to think through different things you do (stove cooking, baking, making salads, making breakfasts, packing lunches) and see where things will be stored, where you'll have room to do the tasks, and what your traffic pattern will be like. It's also good to map out pretty specifically what you need to store and where it will fit in the new plan...Be very realistic, so that you're not assuming something general and larger like the pantry will hold more than it really has room for.

I think youÂd do better with a corner cabinet than a flat cabinet in the corner by the windows.

What kind of hood are you planning to use over the cooktop? From the look of your kitchen, a range may work better for you. Reasons? The cooktop on the island requires a vent hood above, which blocks the eye from your beautiful windows. Also, since there is no raised area around the stove, anyone sitting at the island or the table is in danger of being splattered if you are frying something. The shelves over the single oven could easily be replaced with a vent hood without losing space or impacting the view of the windows.

You state that your hubby would like to make the island handle seating as well, which I think would work very well in your kitchen. Either raise the whole island or do a dual height island and add bar stools to the outside edge. You could still put the table where you are planning and it would look lovely.

What are you doing with the two cabinets to the left of the fridge? Will there be pantries and a broom closet there? I might be tempted to put upper and lower (drawer) cabinets there with the broom closet at the end. That would allow a landing spot next to the fridge, while still allowing room to store cans and food in those cabinets.

Perhaps consider increasing the space to the sink from the oven. I don't know how far your farm sink will project, but as drawn, I'd bet on the oven door hitting the sink.

If the table is permanently positioned at the end of the cabinet island, I might move the cook top towards it a bit so that the counter space on the ref side became wider and more usable.

Maybe use a lift up door for the appliance garage. You hafta move less stuff to actually use it. Best would be if it lifted up and stored into the cabinet when open.

Others have put outlets in the pantry and used a fixed shelf for small appliances. The pantry can be a handy spot for a micro as well as battery chargers.
