We used a solution of 50/50 fabric softener and water and it worked well for us. The only thing I'd do differently next time is to buy the unscented as the smell of the scented kind can get really annoying after a while.

Have you scored the paper first? I used the scoring tool from homedepot and than used hot water with vinegar in a sprayer and a good putty knife to remove 1700sq feet of paper in my home. Took alot of patience but it worked as well as it did with the steamer. Use the scoring and spray and then steam the room with a hot shower and then try pulling and scraping maybe? Good luck and chin up it will be worth it!

Hey Boxer: I've removed alot of wallpaper in my day, and the easiest for me is using part water part fabric softener. I would start by removing the "outer" layer of wallpaper. The under layer will stick to the wall. I then wet it down with the water/fabric softer blend (mostly water, maybe 75/25) and let it soak for awhile. Actually, plain water will work, too. Then I would use a small plastic scraper, like you use to smooth wallpaper when putting it up, and that underneath layer will scrape right off. It's a bit messy. The last time I took off wallpaper, the original owners had used rubber cement to keep the seams down. Talk about a pain!!

I have also used fabric softener, and it worked well.

If NONE of this works....

I've taken down wallpaper in my entire house, and most of it was horrible but eventually came down.
Stuck to the original wallboard with too little primer. We ended up with countless holes to patch.

Well in the MBR I finally gave up, it defeated me. Hired someone to put up 1/4" wallboard over the whole room.
It's like thick cardboard. Like new walls!
He pulled off the baseboards and replaced them so they look correct.
The trim around the doors and windows just got a little "shallower".
We put crown molding around the ceiling to cover the seam.
(We were doing that anyway.)

I wouldn't have done it in the LR, but upstairs I really don't think anyone would guess.

Something to keep in mind.

I spent 39.95 at Lowe's for a steamer and it was so easy. Hold it to the wall and keep moving slowly along and then yank it down. One of us did the steamer and the other pulled the paper. Messy but the fastest way to do it. We did four layers in one day.

The wallpaper is gone.

I ended up trying it all. Diff, Diff concentrate,
Fabric softerner, Windex, hot water, soap....and it came
down to wearing my fingernails off but it is worth
having beautiful walls ready to paint.
( I never did rent a steamer, hard to justify with
this tiny bathroom)
