What to do with extra medication?

My cat is dying. She's has renal failure and some other problems. We've been giving her medication for about five months. She took a turn for the worse this weekend. Dh and I have decided not to continue giving her the medication. Is there a program that will accept already purchased medication for pets? We have two unused vials of Procreat (Sp?)and an unopened container of Azodyl pills. These are expensive. I'd hate to throw them away. I will not donate them to an individual.

Thanks for any suggestions.

    Adella,
I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty. Check with your clinic and see if they will take them back and refund your money. Some clinics may not refund your money but you may see if they have a client that is on a fixed income or cannot afford the medication and they could give them the medication. If they won't take them check with your humane society.
    Hope this helps!

Ask your vet if there is a family with a similar situation who could use the meds, preferrably a family who is having trouble financially.

When my first lab passed, all of his meds were donated to a family with a similar situation with their pet through our vet. We also donated all of the unused prescription food we had in the house. I don't think the vet can take back meds that have been dispensed. I would think a family with a similar problem would be thankful to get a donation of meds.

I am very sorry about your cat.

Thanks! I'll check with the vet next week. I'd be happy to donate them to another family through the vet.

My old hound dog passed away last friday. I have extra medication that I've been thinking about calling the local pet shelter to see if they can even accept it. Not sure the legalities of that though... I think most of the stuff would be okay excpept for maybe the diazepam.

I'm sorry your old cat is so ill.

    Since I don't know how renal failure "feels", I'd call the to be sure she isn't in pain;
if she is, please have the vet give her a painless journey out of this life.

& to make her as comfortable as possible, stay with her:

I am still reeling over the post where the vet said the owner "isn't allowed" to stay with their pet at this last moment.

(A friend donated her cat's unused meds to a rescue...

& fell in love with one of their kitties & the rest is history!)

Oh gosh, missed that one and hope I don't find it. The vet should be having a 'last moment' over that.

On topic, my rescue group accepts med donations, and you should be able to find a kitty rescue near you that will be grateful for your generosity during a difficult time. I'm very sorry about your kitty, I know how painful this can be for the owner too. Take care,

I've referenced my experiences with our old hound dog in many posts. He was the escape artist and forever the stubborn old hound. He was in our family for 13 years... we will miss him, but it was his time. He was stubborn right up until the end, passing away on his own, in my arms, as I was carrying him out to the car to take him to the Vet to be euthanized.
