soldering question

I'm fairly new to sweating copper pipe. I've done a few. I soldered a 1/2" copper union that was a very tight fit. No matter how many union fittings I tried, they were all tight to the point I had trouble getting them on. I finally got a solder-filled union on (also tight)and I sweated it. I turned on the water and there are no leaks. My question is...how do I know if I made a good joint? The fact that it doesn't leak is that enough? Can it fail down the road? I need to cover it with sheet rock and I want to make sure it's a good seal before I do that.
