Outdoor automatic drinking system

19 years ago

I've recently been seeing this (or something simmilar, I'm not sure if it's the same brand) watering system, and I'd be interested to know if anyone has/had one and if anyone can tell me how well they work or if they're a waste of money.

Generally when we're outdoors for long periods of time to the degree that the dogs would need their dish refilled more than once or so, is when there are lots of distractions and we may not get to it right away, or it might get knocked over because of all of the people. So I'd be interested in investing in one of these, if they do their job, and aren't more of a pain in the butt than they're worth.

My only concern is our beagle, she HATES water, or getting wet. Hates the hose, the sprinkler, bathes, rivers, pools..anything, so I'm not sure if this thing would scare her, or if she'd drink from it. Big guy would love it, he adores anything to do with water.

Anyone have any experience? Are they loud? Do they splash a lot?

    I think I'd go for something that's designed more as a waterbowl. Wouldn't it be a little difficult for a dog to get enough water from a stream?

    I picked up one of those water bowls attached to a hose that fills until the auto-shut off senses the water dish is full. The darned hose was so unwieldy that I was afraid that the dogs might overturn the bowl by running into it while at play. Then the auto-stop feature would not engage and the hose would just continue to run...

    I settled on simply giving them a bowl of water whenever they were out for any length of time.

    A couple of my friends have auto fill bowls for their dogs/cats so they don't have to worry about the bowls being emptied or spilled while they are out. I'm not sure the link is for the exact one they have, but if you want something like this I can find out which one they have. They are both happy with the ones they have, although my one friend originally bought a much more expensive one that did not work correctly and exchanged it for the one she has now. She has had it for about four years.

    I bought an auto water bowl at Wal Mart, I don't remember how much I paid for it. It is conected to a hose, and I mounted it on the wall. I have only used it for a couple months but it works great! My dogs are inside dogs and are only outside with me so I only turn it on when I am outside for a long time. Just remember to turn it off when I go in.

    Why not just put a decorative fountain outside? Dogs will usually drink from one. As long as the water is moving, you won't need any chemicals.

    We had a water spigot for our last dog. To get water she would just lick on the device and it would release water. She was a retriever and would play in her water so anything in a bowl was worthless. The above device seems like it would waste alot of water.

    Hmm, one of the autowater bowls might work.

    The bistro waterers are a no go. Big guy is a MESSY drinker and goes through one of those faster than a normal bowl of water. I think he thinks its a game to fill his mouth and then shakes his head and spit it all over. Anything to do with water is a game for him. We use a bistro in the house, but he makes a huge, huge mess with it. But inside we can make him stop once he starts playing instead of drinking.

    Weed, I'd love to have a fountain, unfortunately I don't think my little girl would ever go outside again if I got one. We had a few decorational indoor fountains, that we had to put away because she wouldn't come into the room. So even if she adjusted to it, she'd never drink from it. She's such a princess sometimes.

    We have automatic water bowls throughout the house. I suppose you could place one outside. I don't think the the dogs could tip it over very easily. {{!gwi}}

    quirky- haha! that was hilarious, whew my eyes are watering!

    We keep a 5gal. bucket with water filled for when our Rottie is outside playing- to keep him from playing kick the bucket we use a spring loaded clip and clip the metal part on the handle to the fence. Maybe you could a short bucket for your little one?
