I don't know the dosage of brewers yeast for dogs as I always get it in powder form either bulk or in a jar. It is abundant in B vitamins & the powder can also be rubbed into the fur (while the pet is outdoors) to repel fleas. None of my critters ever have any fleas even during times when they are prevalent.

However, whenever we take in a 'new' pet stray or otherwise, they are always infested with fleas. We always confine newcomers (from the others). We find that a product I discovered about 13 yrs ago is very effective. I had just adopted a Himalayan Persian that was a flea bag. My dog trainer at the time suggested a mousse. I find that Zodiac Mousse for cats & dogs is very effective. It contains pyrethrins & not only kills fleas but also prevents eggs from hatching for 45 days. I've only ever had to use it once (each time) to do the job. I then pass it on to someone, who uses it once, & passes it on, & so on & so on....

I'm sure your problem is more complicated as the fleas are not contained. Be sure to also wash the dog's bedding in hot soapy water & if possible dry in full sun. When bathing you could add a capful of pennyroyal or eucalyptus oil.

Diatomacceous earth, powdered fossilized remains of ocean organisms, scratch the outer shell of the insect, causing it to dehydrate & die. It can be dusted onto rugs, furniture, cracks & crevices or onto pets fur. It is harmless to pets & people.

Many dogs are actually allergic to yeast products so as many items as you see with yeast, you are also seeing yeast removed from many items as well.
The best and safest flea prevenative around IMO is Diatomaceous earth. Below is a link on where to get some. I take this with me every place I go as we travel often. never leave home without it and my dog in 8 years has never had a flea!You can use it on the dog, in the house, and on the ground. Anything with a shell that comes in contact with this dehydrates and dies.

Thanks for the responses. Fleas are still a problem and we're fighting the battle - - ordered some diatomaceous earth treatments today.

Additionally - - Today our dog went to the vet's for a checkup and grooming. They called to say they found bruises under his belly and inside his mouth. He's also lost 6 pounds in the past month. He's been his usual sweet self, with no change in appetite, etc.! They are doing bloodwork to see if they can determine what's going on. Seems flea infestations can trigger other problems!

1cp, sometimes fleas also prey on dogs with weakened immune systems. So it's good your vet noticed these bruises and are following through with other tests. Please let us know what they find out. And good luck

lcp, I'm curious about the bruises on his belly & inside his mouth & the weight loss which seems like a lot. Please give an update when you get the biood test results. Hope you caught the problem in time.

A vendor at a dog show suggested brewers yeast to prevent gas problems in dogs. One of our dogs had gas so bad the smell would wake us up at night! After a few days on the brewers yeast the problem has stopped and has not returned. I've never seen this written up anywhere but it sure worked for us!
