Hate New Drapes

So I spent $400 on drapes for my dining room window and I don't like them at all. No return policy so I can't send them back. They are "wheat" dupioni silk and I thought I would love them because I had the same brand/color in velvet drapes and loved them. But turns out they just look GOLD with the silk. And I dislike the quality of the silk...it just looks really cheap, nothing like my dupinoi silk drapes from Half Price Drapes which I absolutely love. My dining room walls are freshly painted gray and with the gold drapes, it makes it feel like "silver and gold" instead of a pop of yellow against gray which is what I was going for.

So I'm starting to have bold thoughts like trying to dye the drapes another color or washing them in my washing machine to remove some of the sheen of the silk. I remember having a silk baby sling that I washed and preferred the look afterwards.

Would either of these ideas be crazy? Or does anyone have any other suggestions?

What matters in the long run is that you are pleased, but I have to say that I think the color works with everything in the room - except the dining table. The table reads so red compared to the floors, and everything else is the warm grey and white and black. Just for the heck of it, try putting a tablecloth over the table and see if that makes the drapery color feel different.

Also remember that the drapery will read differently on a vertical plane (hung) than they do on a horizontal plane (laying in a pile over the back of the chair).

Looking again at the fabric I linked, and putting the photo of that next to your room photos, it does seem that it could work color-wise. Of course it would make sense to order a sample, but I could see a vertical band, or even a wide band across the top if the drapery is not permanently pleated at the top.

As the others have said, I would not try to dye or wash them.

I love them with the paint color~~ it looks like a Dear Genevieve designed room, which is a compliment. Look how well it ties in your art, as well. I'd hang them and see how you feel.

I probably wouldn't have envisioned the drapes with the wall color initially, but I think they just might work. I would definitely hang them up and see how you feel after a week. It is very true that the color will be different when they are vertical (and dont have the light shining directly over them). Again, I might not have picked them out, but I think they work nicely with your room, even your lovely artwork.
Don't be rushing to panic..... give it a try.
lovely room. and the color is?

I actually think the color is pretty and your wood flooring is a gold tone. I don't think the red tone table looks quite right with the gold tone floor. I would suggest trying a tablecloth as one poster mentioned. I definately would try hanging them and living with them for a week before making a decision to get rid of them. Sometimes when something is different from what you have done in the past it takes a while to adjust to it. Good luck.

The first thing I would do is order the samples from Pottery Barn to make sure the curtains are the color they were advertised as by the ebay seller. If they are not, you may be able to get your money back.

But, I do have to say that I think they look very nice with your wall color. I would hang them and look at them for a few days.

I'm definitely convinced my idea to wash or dye was terrible so I won't do that. I will hang them first and if I'm still not happy then I will choose between the other ideas suggested.

Man, this decorating thing is hard. At first I was going for a tone on tone look and ordered some gray silk drapes but they ended up being more of a brownish gray and didn't work so I put them in my office instead. I thought I learned my lesson and have been a swatch ordering fool ever since. I couldn't find any gray that would work (in my length and price range). My next choice was orange but again couldn't find anything that size other than super expensive custom drapes. So I went for yellow and now I'm kicking myself for not ordering a swatch. Since I have the PB wheat velvet, I thought I knew the color.

So the drapes came "new in package" but it doesn't actually list the color on the package but there is an item number on the label so I entered that into PB's site and it did pull up the wheat silk drapes. Seller has 3,000+ feeback with 100% positive so I trusted her but who knows maybe it's not actually the wheat. I should order a swatch just in case.

You really need to hang them and go thru the effort of putting them up properly to see how they look before you go any further.

katrina_ellen - you are so right about my table!! I knew I didn't like it in there but wasn't sure why but it totally is too red. We stained it to match the cherry cabs in the house we just moved from. I guess it's time for me to refinish it in something else....it sure needs it after taking abuse from my 3 boys.

Hate to be a pest, but could you tell me your paint color? Love it!

Let us see a picture once they are hung !!

Fabric dye lots vary and a swatch of Wheat you would order today could be different than the dye lot your drapes came from some time ago.

I think Les nailed it, the reddish tone of your table might be what clashes with the yellow drapes; I would see a very pale ivory drape in your room.

les917 - thank you for helping me realize that my table is too red for the room!! I will try a table cloth until I can get it refinished!

mitchdesj - good point about the swatch! Ok, I like the way you think...the very first drapes I ordered for this room were these:

But after I ordered they refunded me and said they were no longer available. Three strikes and I'm out on this whole curtain thing, ha ha.

I should be able to hang them tomorrow. One panel was missing the hooks but the seller shipped them out to me yesterday priority mail.

bichonlover - the wall color is BM Ozark Shadows...glad you like the color :).

Looking at the PB site, the swatch and the virtual color changer do look like a softer lighter gold but if you look at the actual room photos, the gold does look intense. What were the ebay photos like?

Have you talked to your seller? She might be willing to take them back anyway. Plain old good customer service. It's possible one of the other bidders would still be interested so not that big of a deal to her. Or maybe she'd hoped for a better price and could relist. Return shipping would obviously be your expense.

I was looking at a comforter on PB and all the room photos showed differently. Some it had pale colors, others somewhat rich. Not sure how there could be quite that much difference or how marketing could not care one way or the other (returns!). Photos aren't very accurate but can make you think. Customer service couldn't tell me anything other than there hadn't been a lot of returns and they do not have samples or swatches at the store for the bedding.

I wonder if they have samples of the drapes in the store. Would be so much easier for all involved!

See if they grow on you but don't build your beautiful room around something you're not really crazy about.

I agree with some of the other posters...they don't look horrible. I think they could work. Also agree the table is the what throws the room off for me. Love the art and it appears to have a little bit of the drape color in it.

Can't wait to see them hung.

I think they are pretty, though they do look more gold then wheat. First I would check with the seller and see if she will take them back. It can't hurt to try.

If she won't then try hanging them up and living with them a couple of weeks.

I think the drapes go beautifully with your artwork and you could add some other touches of gold in the room such as a table centerpiece with yellow/gold and the colors in your painting in it plus other artwork with color. Once the drapes are hung and the room embellished a little I think you might find it is a very elegant dining space.

I would add a lovely coordinating area rug also. The gray on the walls is a neutral and looking at only the drapes against the walls is pretty stark. But with other touches of color in the room, artwork, rug, centerpiece and maybe a tablecloth, the drapes will just be a backdrop to everything else you have going on in the room.

Want to hear the funny part? I just went through great lengths to de-gold this room. Here is a before photo...

I'm with the others who think it looks pretty good. And I agree with patty0315, that maybe adding another little touch of the gold somewhere will tie it all together. Brass candlesticks, a gold frame, rug, a centerpiece, etc. The drape color looks fabulous with that artwork.

I also agree with Les, the table is the odd man out, and it's color is what (on my monitor) is throwing the whole room off.

That being said, colors on a monitor, personal taste, etc. are all different. If you really don't like them, I'd either try and return them, or resell them and find something else. If it were me, I'd hang them and see how I felt about it in a week.

Add wide white/cream (color of your trim) fabric stripes to panels to diminish
the gold color. also paint your table black.

So the drapes came "new in package" but it doesn't actually list the color on the package but there is an item number on the label so I entered that into PB's site and it did pull up the wheat silk drapes

I agree that they don't look the right color. I assume they were advertised as wheat? Since the package doesn't sound like it has a lot of markings; I'd wonder if they are the correct drapes. Someone bought something from ebay; think it was last year; it was being questioned whether it was a "good" knock off or something to that effect. It was also suggested it was bought from the outlet store. I would email the seller to let her know you are questioning the color just in case you find out they aren't real or the correct color as listed. Ebay should get you your money back if they are not described correctly.

Do you have a PB store near you? You can bring one with you to compare the color.

As for the color curtains if you get new ones; you can do a sage as well as a blue or red.

I found the gold online as fabric- link is below

Well those PB pictures are useless. There are some wheat room shots that are much paler. But then what's the gold one (first image below). I don't see where there's another gold it could be. Much like the color you have whatever it is.

That wheat would sure be pretty with your wall color! The ebay listing could help you with a return/claim for 'not as described' if it shows the lighter color.

I just surfed ebay; I did find one that advertises the wheat as gold; she uses the PB wheat picture spring meadow posted above-

ebay 2 POTTERY BARN WHEAT GOLD DUPIONI SILK DRAPE CURTAINS (excuse all caps copy & pasted) Description - You are looking at 2 Pottery Barn Dupioni Silk Pole Pocket Drapes in the color Wheat, a light gold color.

Girl, your drapes are BEAUTIFUL! You just have to keep working the room. If something doesn't work take it out and try something else. I am getting ready to paint my dining room a very dark, dark gray so I know working with it can be tricky. Here are a couple of pics I think are good inspiration.

I remember the bluer color of your previous paint. . . this one looks lavender to violet. The curtains are pretty, the color is nice, the table is nice, the chairs are nice ---- they are all great individually, but none of these disparate elements look good when they are all together in the same room. Too many colors, types, styles, messages, as though you want several different looks at the same time. I would find one inspiration picture that you really love and work towards that, regardless of what you find on sale, or like whilst you are out shopping . . . if it doesn't contribute to that inspiration photo, don't buy it, paint it or hang it.

You all are so helpful! I really appreciate all the links and photos!

caminnc - I love the way the chair cushion fabric plays off the grey walls in the first pic. That was kind of what I was going for but lighter although looking at that pic makes me wish I had gone darker!!

I'm going to put a link to the ebay listing. Her photo was of the actual drapes in the package. I really think the seller did nothing wrong with the description, although looking back I do wish I would have asked if she was willing to take a refund despite the policy just because I wasn't happy with the color even though that is totally my fault. But at this point, I have already asked her to send me the hooks that were missing from one of the panels. It took her a while to get some because I insisted that they be the pottery barn hooks and not just any old hooks (b/c I wanted them to hang the same). So she already spent time, energy and money to get me the hooks. Yes, they were supposed to be included in the first place but I'd feel like an ass if I asked her to take them back now...I could have asked BEFORE she did all of that, lol. If I can't make them work though, I will try to resell them and just list them for lower....maybe someone will want them.

It's great that the ebay seller has been so helpful. That definitely does NOT mean she would not be accommodating if you explained to her how unhappy you were. Make it clear that you are not blaming her in any way, but you are not happy with the color and wonder if she would possibly consider taking them back. You could offer to pay her some amount (percentage?) for her trouble. An ebay seller doesn't get to have 3000 buyers and a 100% positive rating without being very good at customer service. I encourage you to give her a chance to offer exceptional service!

Finally got them up! Day one....I'm going to give myself a week before making a decision. The table cloth didn't work out with the three kids, ha ha so I'll have to work on the table later. We recently moved here and the furniture came from out old house so it wasn't chosen for the room. I'm going to look at what I can add to the walls to tie the drapes in if I decide to keep. They definitely need to be steamed and hemmed though!

I like them. I'd keep them. Honestly...color varies with light and texture. You said your other drapes in wheat were velvet...velvet is going to "read" differently than dupioni silk. The texture of velvet absorbs light when hung one way--reflects when hung another. Dupioni silk is reflective regardless.

If I were you and decided I couldn't live with them I'd cut my losses and either put them back up on ebay or donate them to Habitat for Humanity's ReStore and take the tax deduction. Actually---I'd just donate 'em and take the deduction. WAY less work!

I love them. I have gold silk panels in my entryway with gray walls and I love the combination. You can pleat them with your fingers and use ties to set the pleats once you decide whether to keep them. That way, they'll hang gracefully and neatly.

I think they look great! The room looks much less matchy-matchy which gives it a real designer look!

Those inspiration pictures that Cam posted are really helpful.

I agree with the others that said they work great with the artwork.

This all may be a blessing in disguise!

I think it looks great in the picture. Very sophisticated.

    Thanks everyone!
Dee - do you have any photos of your entryway? I'd love to see how you accessorized!

I was not expecting to like the combination; but it's actually one of the things I like the most about it now that you have hung those, it is unexpected and it does work. Can you hang your artwork? I think that helps pull it together. Very sophisticated!

    I think they're gorgeous.

I love it too. I didn't think that it would work but it is great!

I think they are beautiful! Very sophisticated with the wall color.

I like them with your wall color and they mimic the color of the shades on your chandy when it's lit. Looks really pretty.

Again, YOU have to be the one that loves it, but I think it looks just beautiful! Particularly in that daytime shot, the color of your walls, floor and the drapes is just very, very pretty.

The "before" pic just screams tacky gold...too much, too bright, too harsh, too yellow. It's casting an unfortunate glow on that poor gentleman in the doorway.

The "after" pic looks rich, elegant, sophisticated, and very tastefully done.

I love the colour of your drapes and love love the colour of your walls (now I want my LR de-golded, may have to approach DH about painting - heavy sigh).

I have always loved gold and grey together so of course I love the curtains with the wall color. Would maybe think about painting the table black and using a bit of gold/silver artwork on the walls

    Looks good!

You just never know until you get them up. Very very nice!

I wasn't expecting to like them either, but I have changed my mind. They look really great, even better when you hang art etc.

Now it looks to me like you didn't make a mistake, they look FABULOUS!!!

They look fantastic with your wall color!

I also love the way it looks.

I came across this picture in one of my favourite blogs. It's a pic of the grey kitchen, but you can see the grey dining room and gold silk curtains through the doorway. Fabulous. Also note the gold picture frames and other details in the kitchen.
