Start up method

O.K., it's getting close to that time of year, again. In the past, I've always maintained the pool year round. However, during the past couple of years, I've not done that due to health problems. The pool is green with leaves at the bottom. I cannot see the bottom.

My thinking is that I will scoop up as many leaves out of the bottom that I can while at the same time, shocking it and running the pump and filter. Would it be easier to drain the pool and get the leaves out that way? Or, to shock it enough to see the bottom and work with it with the water still in? Thanks.
