bathroom sink drain

I am attempting to replace my bathrro sink, and faucet. When I was removing the old one, the drain body was extreamly difficult to remove from the drain. Now I cant get the new one in, I've even tried lubricating it. Is there any trick? I'm getting frustrated.

In removing the old lav, the procedure is to first loosen and remove the P-trap from both the lav and the drain pipe, then pull the sink.
Installation is in the opposite order.
