Help with thread

Can a regular sewing machine sew with embroidery thread. I bought some embroidery thread because the color matched whereas the thread I usually buy did not. It will not floss through my machine properly and when I try to sew with it it just won't, it just screws up. I have a Pfaff 2048 and am using a topstitch needle. What am I doing wrong? This Pfaff is very persnickety and I have had a lot of trouble with it. Any ideas out there about this problem. Thank you.

Don't know exactly what you're trying to do with it, but I once saw a Threads article about sewing with decorative and novelty threads. Apparently, you can wind just about anything into the bobbin and run regular thread that has to go through the eye of a needle on top to engage it. You have to sew upside down, of course, so I suppose there would be a learning curve to getting it right without any visual clue until you're done.

See if the link below is helpful.

Then there's couching. You can get a foot that will allow you to run the embroidery thread between the fabric and the presser foot so that you can run a stitch through it or a zigzag stitch on either side.

OTOH, if you're just trying to run embroidery floss through the top threading & tension mechanisms and the needle it may just not be strong enough to hold up under that stress since it was made for hand work -- a very different application.

Not sure it would work for you but I just used a variegated bias binding that ran from an ocre color to light green to very dark green. There was no way I could match the tread. I used my basic ecru thread and took colored Sharpies to the various sections. Disguised the surface threads nicely but then it's not something that will ever be washed.

For piecing I don't match anything. I always use a neutral on whatever I'm piecing.

It's not embroidery floss, it's just emboidery thread for an embroidery machine and I'm doing FM quilting and my machine just wouldn't take it. It's 40wt 100 % trilobal polyester. Don't know what trilobal means but it just won't go through the machine. It looks just like regular thread and the only reason I bought it instead of all purpose is because it matched better. Anyway, I can't use it and I found some old spools of yellow that I'm using. I've had it for now. I'm going to go have a glass of wine:)

Hmmm. I think it's your machine. I use poly embroidery thread quite a lot for machine quilting and have never had a problem with it. I do use 100% cotton in the bobbin.

Hi Grei - I also have a Pfaff 2048 - 7 months now; but I am a long time Pfaff 1222e sewer. I have not found the 2048 to be too particular about the thread, but I have not used that many different kinds in straight stitching, but have used various in the multi hole decorative stitching. I have taken a few classes at the dealer & I have taken some notes on tension adjustment on the various threads. I find the tension to need adjusting more than I am used to.
I only use Schmetz needles. Some off brand came with the machine and I did not like the stitch quality.

Currently I am using Essential Thread from Connecting Threads - I find it sometimes shreds & is very linty. I change the needle when it shreds & I clean out the bobbin case and the shuttle often. Also clean out under the needle plate - often!

I purchased a single hole needle plate and it made a huge difference in the stitch quality and the FM on my practice squares.

I will look my settings up and post back to you - I have to run right now & you are having a well deserved drink! I have also had success with the transparent thread.
We can compare! I'll be back & hope I can be helpful.

I have used the embroidery thread in my Baby lock which is not and embroidery machine. I used it with the decorative stiches and had no problem. I used cotton or bobbin thread in the bobbin. I have also used it for st. stitches. I have never FM with it.
My only suggestion is to check your tension when using it and also making sure that it is going thru the upper tension the way it should. I have problems with that from time to time. Jayne

I use embroidery thread in my Janome with no probs.
As Annie stated, I use cotton quilting in the bobbin.
My machine is very fussy about the bobbin thread!!

I don't have an embroidery machine and I don't use embroidery thread.

Is it possible something has slipped out of one of the threading channels? Have you tried pulling the thread out and rethreading?

Just a Hail Mary, I know, but things like that or catching that tiny loop on the presser foot when you're chaining and you try to stitch two rows together happen to me. When that stuff happens I sometimes sit there and try the same thing over and over instead of looking for the little mechanical thing. Bet you're cleverer than I am but I thought it was worth asking. ;>

I agree to rethread and try a new needle.
