Help! BM Aura paint

I hate it. I love their Regal line but hate the Aura. We like to tape off b/c DH and I do not have steady hands for cutting in. Well, when we took the tape off, it pull off the fresh paint. We have peeling everyhwere. I am so upset. We have never had a problem with blue painter's tape until we used this Aura paint. We don't even know how we are going to fix it. Do we have to sand down all the peeling areas? or do we just paint over them?

I'm sure someone will help you out here, but you should also try the paint forum, some professional painters hang out there........

Here is a link that might be useful: paint forum

My guess would be that letting it dry thoroughly and then using patch to fill in the voids would be the easiest thing to do.

    Patch, sand smooth and repaint.

Aura is a real bugger for a lot of DIYers. It takes some practice. It is a really fast paint to paint with.

Same principles for applying nail polish applies to Aura. Have to load the brush "just right", position the brush exactly where you want it, lay it on in one shot and keep moving never going back into what you've already painted. You progress painting only at the wet edge - which is wet only for a short period of time, much like nail polish.

Aura, again like nail polish, will drag and lose its leveled look if you go back over it. It also does not *puddle* in a friendly manner, just like nail polish puddling at the cuticle.

When painting your nails the objective is to not get too much puddled polish at the cuticle and a similar objective applies to Aura at the tape line.

Aura is a thick, somewhat gel-like paint. The good news is that because it is so full bodied it is reluctant to seep under the tape if it is not burnished down well. The bad news is that it instead puddles and *sits on top* of the tape and then dries connected to the film on the wall.

If you puddle Aura at the tape line, you really need to go around the room with a blade to break that connection so the puddle doesn't pull the paint off the wall.

Hope this made sense. I just painted another room this weekend with Aura. I adore painting with it, I adore the very elegant final finish, the coverage and color quality is stunning, but I can totally understand why this paint doesn't suit everyone's paint skills.

You should still post over on the Paint Forum. Maybe they'll offer other/better solutions to repair the walls.

Thanks for your help! We were able to touch-up the areas of peeled paint wiht a small artist brush. I also used a blade to help pull off the rest of the tape! It worked!
We are definitely not the most skilled painters. We learn new tricks each time we paint another room!

Funcolors has great tips. I have used SW Duration which is also a waterborne paint-great finish. I applied the blue tape at the ceiling line and then painted a thin coating of the white ceiling paint on the wall edge of the blue tape. This pre-sealed the edge of the tape so that when I painted the wall (2 thin coats), no paint seeped under the tape. It worked great. The tape came off easily and the line remained crisp.

I've used the same technique when taping off baseboard and door trim, except instead of painting along the tape line, I applied a very thin layer of clear painter's caulk and that also worked great.

There's also a new kind of tape, called Frog Tape (got some at Home Depot) which is supposed to create a seal at the tape edge as soon as you apply paint. Haven't tried it yet, but I've read over at the Paint Forum that it works well. If it works as advertised, it would eliminate the steps I described above.
