Solid color fabric recommendations please

What solid color fabric is your favorite to use when you need solids?

Do you use bleached & unbleached muslin when you want a solid off white or white?

I really need to increase my solids stash. I had purchased a few solid quilting broadcloths from Joanns - not thrilled with them - they are okay for small pieces in a block, but I would not want to use them for a large square for instance, or when I need alot of solid.

I've considered the Kona Cotton - Am I on the right track? Please recommend your favorite - not just for price, but for washing, and sewing and quilting (machine).

Thanks!

I like Kona solids, black, white and ivory. There is also a black that is the darkest and you pay a bit more. They wash and quilt well for me. I order them online rather than the JoAnns ones.

I do use muslin but in place of any solid I prefer to use a tone-on-tone print. From even a short distance it will register as a solid but you'll have more depth and interest. I have a moderately large stash and there's not a solid there, except for unbleached muslin and a small piece of black I bought for one of the lottos.

If you haven't looked at them before, check out the Jinny Beyer tonals. They are beautiful and blend with anything.

I use Kona also. There's also Moda Bella solids that I've been hearing lots of good things about.
I'll use muslin, but only if it's a premium one. (Just cause it's called premium doesn't mean it's expensive. Even the premium (or super) muslin at Walmarts has a nice feel to it and it's under $3. a yd.)

Kate, I'll agree that most of the times tone-on-tones work well, but there are times, IMHO, that nothing will set off some prints nearly as well as a carefully chosen solid.

Best place I've found for Kona is Fabric Shack. Great selection, prices and service. I haven't any experience with the Fatquarter Shop, but they carry the Moda Bella and it doesn't seem expensive.

I, too, love Kona cotton. The colors are great. Hancock of Paducah has a wonderful selection. They also have muslin, for quilts. I like the premium 200 thread ct. They have a 120" wide muslin the sell for only $8.98 which makes it very inexpensive. As I like black I like to keep that on hand as well. Jayne

Kona Cotton for me, too, and I usually get it from Hancock's of Paducah. The only thing I've started doing is when I receive it, I write the color of it on the selvedge because there are so many shades.....and I want them all! Black, white, bone and muslin are the ones I try to always have on hand and buy in yardage. A long time ago I bought the color samples of what they had at the time, and it was a good buy. I'd like to have a new one as they've added so many shades, but would rather buy fabric.....sigh.

I use Kona cotton mostly, but I do have Moda Bella (in solid white) that I love too. I recently bought some Kona cotton in a beautiful gray and Chinese red. I also bought black at the same time. Those 3 colors are so beautiful together. I'm thinking I bought those at Hancock's but I could be wrong. "Someone" was having a big sale on their Kona solids and I couldn't believe all the beautiful colors. The fabric is outstanding!

I tend to use the basic black (I always buy the blackest black I can find), white and off white most of the time. The Fabric Shack, Fat Quarters and Hancock's are the best places to start. Have fun!!
