Paint first! You won't need to worry about protecting the carpet.

Paint as gives the place a new feel/crispness. Most buyers know if they want to change the carpet if they don't like the color or age or quality. However, can make a new impression of age of a home via paint job.

Warning a detail buyer might think you are masking something so try to take before pictures to show if challenged on things.

What?

Paint first... it goes much easier that way!

Paint before putting in new wall to wall. But are you sure you need new w/w? Would a good, professional steam cleaning job be almost as good?

If you paint first, then put in the new carpet, make sure you keep some paint, in case the carpet installers accidentally nick or damage any of the paint job.

Paint - we used the wall to wall carpet as a drop cloth in my last house!

We painted first when we updated our house. The new carpet was of a thinner depth, and so all the baseboards needed to be touched up since another 1/2 inch showed. So do think about that. The carpet installers knicked the woodwork here and there too.
