replacing recessed light

In the soffitt above my kitchen sink, I have a 6 inch diameter recessed light. The rim is about 1 1/2 inches wide and isn't flush with the ceiling (house built 1970). I'm trying to hang a woven wood shade at the window there but the rim prevents me from getting the shade flush with the ceiling. I ordered a narrower rim but it doesn't work with the light.

My question is, can this light be replaced with a smaller can, say 4 inches, or could I do a semi flush single bulb light?
