I wouldn't try washing them with any modern soap. Anything that old is likely to disintegrate if man-handled.

You could try soaking in cool water, and rinsing them. Lay them on a towel to dry.

Be careful with them or they may fall apart. We'd love to see photos!

There is a product called Restoration sold at quilt shops that whitens the antique blocks. It is safe on fabric and you just soak them. I've used it and it is a miracle how well it works. You might want to try that.

I also recommend the Restoration and careful handling. Darker fabrics are more likely to disintegrate and will require very careful handling.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try to find that product. I've also heard that soaking in buttermilk will help. Has anyone heard of this or tried it? I was very fortunate to come across these blocks. They are of the "Antebellum lady" with the big hooped skirt and parasol with her facing away. If I can get them presentable and they stay together(they seem fairly sturdy) I'll have a real treasure. Thanks again
