Glory Hallelujah! My toothache got better, and the dentist said X-rays were fine. No abscess, no root canal! To celebrate my mere gum infection, I skipped on over to the LQS and treated myself to five new spools of thread--2 Mettler, 3 Gutterman--colors that I really NEEDED.

I got those babies home and nestled them in my thread box, and it occurred to me that I was insane. I have different colors of thread that I'm using for piecing this Applecore charm, so that the odd stitch that shows on my concave edges will match the fabric. I'm "sure" more will show when I quilt it and it gets a bit of pull. I was really surprised when I counted them: 44.

How many different colors of thread do you have?

62.... But for piecing I almost always use either gray or beige. I don't match the fabric unless the quilt is all shades of one color.

Ohmygosh, you don't even want to know! Many years ago, back when thread was 19 cents a spool and the spools were wooden, I went to an auction at a department store in town. Remember real department stores? They had fabric and clothing and shoes, and little tubes shwooshing overhead, and elevators, complete with operators? LOL.

Anyhows, they were selling everything in the store, and when it got to the threads nobody else bid. I got THEIR ENTIRE INVENTORY. I gave everyone I knew boxes of it. I sold it at yard sales (practically gave it away), I sewed with it and that was back when I sewed A LOT.

Some of the spools I had used got tangled up and I pitched it. I donated it to Goodwill. And I still have a whole sewing stool full of it. And, I'm still using off it. The only threads I have to ever buy are black and white. LOL. There is every shade in the rainbow. No, I'm not going to go count them.

I still buy quilting threads, and my husband who used to do very fine embroidery work, has every thread DMC ever made, I think.

    We got thread.

I can't beat Caliope. Sounds like no one can. Wow, what a bargain! Even though I don't need it, I'm envious.

I have three Tupperware marinaters (marinators?) filled with threads. They're squat rectangular containers with lids (burp). Two have spools and one is all bobbins.

Awhile back there was a tutorial on cotton threads. I went through the inventory and pitched all the 4/$1 polyesters and nasty old spools.

Like everyone else I use mostly cream, white and black for quilting.

Ok you really don't want me to count them all do you? Lets just say ......lots and different shades of them too :-)

But I like to sew mostly with cream or natural type colors.

Calliope--hootie hoot! That's hilarious, sounds just like something my family would do. :)

    Thread is good.

I have two computer paper boxes full of thread of all different varieties with just about every color you can think of and a few that should never have happened.
Like the rest of you I end up buying black, white and cream for the quilting projects.
Most of my spools have come from garage sales or from friends that have given up on sewing and figure I could NEVER have too much thread or fabric........... they should see my stashes! LOL

I stopped counting at 100 spools, and that doesn't include the pre-wound bobbins, LOL.

In my defense, many of those spools are rayon embroidery threads bought for my business. I try to use them up on the occasional gift, but I probably won't use them in quilting. The rayon threads fade in washing. Not a problem with a holiday towel, but a major issue for quilting.

    This is an excellent question.

I am ASTOUNDED at Calliope's frugalness. Wow. What a haul. ("we got thread" ... made me giggle!)

I have been using up the odd colors I have on my piecing, especially for scrap quilts. I think I'm down to about 65 colors now.

I prefer to buy white, black, grey, and a pale tan/"natural" color to sew with now. But back when I was sewing satin & taffeta Can-Can dresses for my daughters' French classes, I acquired lots of Gutermann thread in glorious colors. I love that stuff! so that's what I buy now.

    Calliope, you are the bomb!

I don't buy anything except greys, neutrals, black and white as that's what I use the most of. The colors I have, I'm trying to use up on applique.

Miz Calliope! "We got thread," indeed!

    Calliope! Wow!
I wouldn't want to count mine either, I have a ton.
Seems like when I get a bunch of something things change & I'm buying tons of something else!
I took a class from Frieda Anderson & she likes 30wt Rayon
for machine quilting......so of course I had to buy a bunch!
It is luscious to look at! Thread is definitely as addictive as fabric! Jill

No competition with Calliopi, but there is too much to count. Embroidery rayon, serger, silk, cotton, nylon, invisable, very fine, quilting, spools, cones, etc. and I still never have just what I want!! Jayne

I have 35 different colors that I use for baby burps and other sewing projects. Included are 3 different shades of purple and 4 exact shades of red, 2 same of pink. Did I think I would run out LOL??? I must have bought it and forgot I had it.
Over 80 spools of machine embroidery thread. Some of the large spools will last my lifetime!!
For piecing and quilting I use white, black, beige, or grey.
I have 5 spools of white hand quilting thread. why??
But I do think Calliope wins.
